Nice. It's too bad that these museums and historical organizations didn't realize that they ought to do something to preserve those locomotives years ago. By the time they figure it out, it's usually too late to do anything without a lot of money. It's also too bad that scumbags have nothing better to do than vandalize things so fences have to be built in. Thanks for the link to the museum. Did you work at Transcona? I looked at Google Maps of the area. Looks like a large complex.

I actually never worked at the Transcona Shops but at the Symington Yards and in particular the Diesel Shop. It made sense for the railway to build big in Winnipeg because we are at the longitudinal center of Canada. Everything comes through here eventually....

The Transcona Yards at top right were built starting in 1912 by the Grand Trunk and was the center for the steam locomotives of the day. Roundhouse, car shop and such. During World War II the shops were converted to producing munitions and in fact all of the munitions used by Canada in the Pacific theatre, including the cordite was manufactured in Transcona. As the end of the steam era loomed Symington was constructed to service the new diesel locomotives. Transcona has remained in use but with different types of work, such as railcar manufacture and maintenance, traction motors rebuild, Bridges and Structures, rail welding plant, Work equipment repair and maintenance (my son works there..). It is also home to the CN training campus where all new employees from across Canada spend varying lengths of time learning their trades. Oh yeah the Transcona Yard complex is about 2 1/2 miles long. There are 6 bars within a 5 minute or less walk from the main gate.

It has a double hump capable of handling over 2000 railcars a day. It also has a car shop, the diesel shop which also incorporates the trip pits. The diesel shop can accommodate 45 locomotives indoors.
It also had the cleanest locomotive wash pit in the country, at least that the auditors would tell me while I worked there :-).

CN's Intermodal Winnipeg Terminal is also on the property.

I missed the steel foundry that is just up the block from the Transcona Shops (Griffin Steel) where all the wheels needed for Canadian operations are produced.
