I think I’ll take Wednesday off. That will give me three days off plus the weekend.

Well, there are a few things that I don't know about. Is Transport Canada the same thing as the FRA down here?
I don't know what the work/rest rules are up there. I don't understand what they said about booking rest while they were on duty. Don't get me wrong, I was a union member for 50 years. 30 with the railroad, but I have a couple of issues here. First, were they called to work before their legal rest was up? Down here, they can do that but it has to be documented and the FRA doesn't like it. Even if they call you on short rest you have to be prepared for 12 hours on duty. I don't think we know that about this situation.
Second, it shouldn't be the chief dispatchers obligation to call Transport Canada or the crews Health and Safety department.
How far was it to the relief spot from where they were? They spent a whole lot of time talking about this. Probably could have made it to where they needed to be at a reduced speed.
Again, there are a few things that I don't know about the operations up there and the details are lacking. I do understand that CN management has historically been very overbearing towards train crews.
Down here, if we were instructed to do something that we didn't agree with, the general course of action would be to do it and file a grievance afterward. There are too many issues with failure to follow instructions or even insubordination to not do it.
I'm not trying to stick up for management here, but unless there were issues with the crew being improperly called to work, being too tired to do your job is not the railroads fault. Of course if something would have happened, I'm sure that the railroad would have been ultimately at least partially responsible. The article that I read about this said that they didn't end up moving the train. Just my opinion based on the limited knowledge of this.

Thanks for your response! Myself not having been in the running trades, the whole rest procedure is confusing to me as well. Yes Transport Canada is the FRA equivalent.

It's a slippery area, being fit for duty for 12 hours is one thing, but what if the conductor falls ill during those 12 hours and can't complete the commitment. The conductor does say that he was unfit after 10 plus hours, so the dispatcher should have handled it as such. Heavy handed indeed by the dispatcher, in the end the conductor was disciplined by CN.

Yeah, 14 days without pay. A slap on the wrist down here. I've known guys to be held off for 6 months for relatively minor infractions.

    Wednesday check-in - early!

I'm flying out Wed. night to spend a few days with a friend in Baltimore for Thanksgiving. Got my boarding pass and just need to pack a bag tonight, so I can bring it to work tomorrow. The office is closed Friday too. The train to the airport has a stop across the street from my office, so it's pretty convenient to go right from work. Can't wait!
