Typical lead foot %&#$ Florida driver.
So I’ve had 96/70, 93/70, 90/65 and 85/55 as some of my speeding offenses. How do those get treated in Canada land?

BTW those are mph and over several years not at once...

Where I live in Manitoba we have what Mercuns would call socialist auto insurance based upon a merit system. When you first get your license you start with no merits or demerits. For every year that you don't get a speeding ticket you earn a merit towards lowering your insurance rate. However each time you are caught speeding or commiting a traffic offence you are assigned demerits varying as to the degree of your offence. In the end if you are a prudent driver and get 15 merits (like I have) you get the maximum discount on licensing and insurance. In your case you'd be paying a Kings ransom to keep your license... :-)

Speaking of driving... here's a video we made of our roadtrip from Winnipeg to Vegas, LA, SFO, Seattle and back to celebrate turning 50. So many years ago!

In the province of Ontario, a motorist can be charged with street racing when they are clocked doing 50 kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit. The penalty for street racing is an automatic seven-day driver's licence suspension, and the motorist's car is also impounded for seven days. Penalties in court can total a fine of up to $10,000, as well as demerit points.

For speeding less than 50 over, it's a combination of lesser fines and demerits. It's starts to get exponentially significant after 20 over.

In the old days it mattered little and now the insurance companies seem to care even less. Florida auto insurance rates are high compared to most of the country because of the no fault system and claim fraud.

And bad drivers. Not to say that bad drivers are not everywhere, but they seem to tend to gravitate this way.

Probably has more to do with 22 million people and the majority living in the bottom 1/3 to 1/2 of the state. Plus, all those people have learned to drive around the old people that can’t get out from the fast lane.

Florida is among the few states that has to advertise it's two move-over laws. The first and better known, newer move-over is for the first responders on the roadside. The second and now becoming enforced by FHP and locals is the “road rage move over law” from about ten-fifteen years ago. Regardless of how fast you’re driving, in Florida, the left or fast lane is only for passing. Doesn’t matter how fast you’re going. When I’m doing 90, I have to move over as soon as possible for someone going faster. If not and cop sees it, we can all tickets. The faster driver for speeding and depending if cop thinks I was playing speed patrol, I could receive two, one for impeding faster traffic and two for speeding.

Yeah, the "get the fluck out of my way" law. Sorry, Chuck, but unless you are the only vehicle on the road for miles, if you have to drive 90 mph, you are the problem. Most of the trouble is caused by those who choose to drive that fast when the road is crowded, which is most of the time.

I just go with the flow when on the interstate. Here in Florida, that’s 10-15 over. The 90 was for illustration purposes as my Excursion has speed governor at 93mph from the manufacturer. I will say that Florida traffic moves faster than anywhere I’ve driven except for Texas and parts of California though.

Yes, I'll agree with you there. Although I have driven all the way up and down the East Coast on I95 and around DC it gets pretty hairy sometimes.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not shy about exceeding the speed limit. But I try to keep it about 9-10 over. My wife was an insurance agent for 30 years and less than 10 keeps it from bumping your rates up. Of course, if you get multiple tickets within your renewal period, you're screwed.

It just kind of prises me off that they have to enact stupid laws because they can't enforce the ones they already have.

We’re a low tax state. That’s why I drive old vehicles but send my kids to Catholic school. If not for all other states being above the snow line, frost line and freeze line, I’d leave but I hate all cold weather.
