I apologize in advance everyone. This will be kind of graphic.
And this one made me cry for his family and the train crew.
It's a feeling of utter helplessness seeing, but knowing that there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop. Been there. Not that particular situation, but running 50 mph with 10000 tons behind you and seeing pedestrians walking on the track away from you with headphones on, or vehicles pulling onto the track and stopping and looking at you then hitting the gas, hoping the vehicle doesn't stall.
I was fortunate in that during my 30 years as a Locomotive Engineer, I was only involved in 2 accidents with fatalities. Both times the train was stopped and vehicles ran into it at road crossings. One was a 75 year old lady on a dark, rainy night. She apparently didn't see the engine because there was no indication that she attempted to stop.
The other was a loaded log truck running about 55 mph came around a curve, saw the train stopped in the crossing and had no brakes. He swerved around several cars already stopped into the oncoming lane of traffic. The train stopped the truck, but not the logs. They went right through the cab of the truck, crushed him and shot between the train cars. Fortunately there were no vehicles stopped in the other lane. I was about 150 feet away and only felt a little jerk. Much like the slack running in on a cut of cars. Yama will understand that I'm sure.
Sorry for the long story, but it brought back some bad memories.

Given his personality, he'd probably shoot us and drag our bodies back on his property

Just small ones. A car or two or an engine or two on the ground. Usually at relatively slow speeds. Doesn't take a lot of time to rerail them. Never involved in a major derailment.
