    Not that long ago there was the option to subscribe to a thread but at the same time not get notification emails at every new post in it. In fact, I'm subscribed to at least a dozen threads from those days that still don't send me emails when someone posts to them. So the setting may be hidden from the website user interface now, but it exists somewhere. oh well.
