The Runaways spawned both Joan Jett and Lita Ford. Lita was the real force behind the music, but Joan had her own style too. I was a HUGE Lit a Ford fan in High School. I've seen her a couple of times live. Probably in the top 5 of my bucket list is to see her again. She does mostly small shows, but did play with Def Leppard and Poison earlier this year.

We took a Carnival cruise to Mexico for our honeymoon in '95. One night, we sat through a bunch of really bad karaoke until the waitress took the stage and belted out an awesome rendition of this song. Always brings back good memories:

Everything I've been hearing for the past few days are iPhone 5 this and iPhone 5 that. It looks like a really nice phone. Tomorrow is the first day of fall. It's not cold, by winter standards, but it was about 45 out at midnight with a slight breeze. On the news, they were showing people already in line outside Apple stores waiting to buy one as soon as the store opens in the morning.

I don't know why, but I decided that I want to talk to some of these people. No one that I know is standing in line to buy an iPhone 5 in the morning. So I hopped in my car and headed over to a non-mall Apple store. I figured that a mall would not tollerate people camping out all night inside the mall and there are too many entrances to risk having people madly storm the store when they open. So I figured that a standalone outdoor Apple store was my best bet.

It was a bit of a drive, but it was worth it. When I arrived, there were about 15 cars parked in front. Seven people were sitting on fold-out chairs in front of the store. The lights were on, inside, but there were black curtains pulled so that no one could see in. It looked less like the mob that I expected and more like an audition to play Jay and Silent Bob by 3 couples and a much older guy who appeared like he had fortified himself for the cold with Jack Daniels. There were about 10 cars each with either one or two people sittimg in them. There were also two girls who were freelance photojournalists in the parking lot moving their cameras and tripods around to find the best angles given the difficult light.

I approached the front of the store. They were all playing with their iPhone 4s's (only one iPad out being used). I showed them my Blackberry and told them that my contract was up and my timing couldn't be better. They immediately began to talk to me.

The older guy had the most to say. He started with a Mac Classic and mused about computing with 128k of memory. He went on about his Fat Mac, LC2 and losing faith. Scully was the devil incarnate but Steve was able to resurrect Apple from the grave. He raised his hand holding his iPhone and said "Because of this."

One of the couples was talking about how it's like Apple build a wide angle lense into the new iPhone 5 because you can now move the camera while you shoot and get a wider area. I asked if they were talking about panaramic shots and they said yes. I asked them if that's why they were buying the iPhone 5. They said because of the camera and all the other improvements.

The photographers came over, introduced themselves, and asked if anyone minded if they take pictures for a blog website. No one minded so they went back to the parking lot and set up.

I asked the older guy what time he arrived. He said that he got there at around 5:00 PM. The others volunteered times between 6:00 and 9:00 PM. I asked how long the curtains had been drawn, and I was told that the curtains closed as soon as the store closed at 9:00 PM.

Then, I decided to hit them with the big question. I asked why they were in line outside an Apple store at midnight in the cold. A few of them immediately said because they're afraid the phones will sell out. I asked if they were buying the phones for birthday gifts or had some specific need to have the phone tomorrow. The older guy told me that he had accepted a best offer of $315.00 for his iPhone 4s (32gb) on eBay and that he'll have to ship it by Saturday. He needed the iPhone 5 to replace the 4s that he won't have to be without an iPhone.

I try not to judge. I understand what it's like to be driven crazy by pre-release hype for something that you want. But, by now, it's pretty cold. These people really love their iPhones and are genuinely excited about getting the new one.

I went into the whole experience convinced that I'd never stand in line like this to get a BB10 phone when it comes out. But who am I really fooling. I'd never intend to, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that things could probably fairly easily end up that way. There was no big crowd. Just a few people who are just excited and happy that their new device has arrived. They asked why I still had a Blackberry, but, after that, they were friendly and civil. I didn't mock them and they didn't mock me. They were happy and that made me happy too. I won't be buying an iPhone 5 for myself any time soon. But these people will.

But then, one of the men stood up slowly from his chair and just said, "uh oh.". All heads turned and we all watched as a white SUV with flashing yellow lights and a green stripe across the roof and down the doors began to slowly pull up. It wasn't the police. It was worse. It was the contract overnight security team. They slowly got out of their SUV and approached. Everyone who was sitting stood up. The interior dome lights of the parked cars went out. The girl photographers tood their camera off of their tripods and packted them into bags. I thought quickly as they began to walk over. I quicly looked down at my trusty 9650, opened the video camera app, turned the flash off in the settings, clicked my trackpad to start recording, and held my phone with both hands against my chest.

This is how the evening of joy and excitement for these iPhone fans turned to disappontment and abruptly ended.

    aaawwww, that's too bad.

I've never stood in line for a phone but I've lined up for plenty of U2, Amnesty International and Bruce Springsteen concerts. They were always fun, civil, never any trouble. But....I guess the times they are a-changin' and these guys felt things could get ugly...

Personally, I'd never line up and camp over night for anything that wasn't life saving food, water, or medicine. But hey, to each their own. Sucks that they had to have their nights ruined by some rent-a-cop with an ego problem, tho.

Far more likely a case that the rent-a-cop decided to be an just because they could. I have seen that far too often with those type of security agencies.

My father and brother are both cops and my brother used to be a rent-a-cop and they both have plenty of stories where these guys are just being a-holes and trying to be "the man" and control everything.

What I don't get is this:

Why does everyone keep saying "5,000" when the thread title is 50K, as in 50,000?

    Because.

No. It's more like an outdoor mall with an entrance and stores surrounding a parking lot. They were actually pretty nice. They were telling us that we all have to go because it's the policy of the 'mall' owner that there be no trespassing after the stores and restaurants close. They said that there are security cameras everywhere and if anyone reviews the tapes and people are seen sitting there, they will get fired.
