It's even more expensive once you factor in all the costs for maintenance!

My area isn't that expensive but it's just the thought that if I have to move, it'll be very difficult compared with just finding a new apartment. If my mortgage is too high, I'm screwed. If my rent gets too high, I'll just move!

True. A lot depends on where you are in life, financial/career stability, interest rates etc... and of course how the property market is at the time. And as we've seen recently, it can get pretty stupid at times... right carjackd?

I'd rather pay down my own mortgage than someone else's.

We're closing in on mortgage freedom ourselves... and our daughter no longer needs before/after school care... two big expenses coming off the books... holy crap we're not going to know what to do with all the extra money! Heh heh.

I remember when we bought our house 12 years ago thinking "How the **** are we going to afford this?!?!?!?" It was our first house. Prices in our area have tripled since then... I can't imagine trying to buy one now. The Toronto area has just been insane for pricing.

Ya I'm with you. I've never liked the idea of paying someone else's mortgage . However there are some rare cases where rent is better. My buddy had a huge loft off queen street that he was getting for dirt cheap. Center of Toronto, it would have cost a fortune to buy there
