Would you name your Baby Boy "Rocko"....

Long Story short my brother in law thinks is a "awesome" name and would be proud to name his boy "rocko". his wife is due in march and they are trying to think of names....

i know ultimately it's their decision, and his wife said if they get "x" number of votes [from various sources] saying "YES it's an awesome name" she will consider it....

    I wouldn't say it's awesome...

I used to know a father and son both named Rocky, I think that sounds better.

But I really don't like either too much.

I know people named Rocky as well, but Rocko has a totally different sound..

Sounds like the poor kid would never be taken seriously with that name. What if it's a girl? Rockette?

Kid would get the crap beaten out of him for having such a 'tough' name. Imagine if he turned out to be the nerdy, mild type of kid. Then he'd really get dogged.

Sounds like trying to live vicariously through ones' kid. Two thumbs down.

How about Rocko as a family nick-name? The idea being that "Rocko" may not be taken seriously as an adult. Do they want him to be a CEO or manager? Or do they want him in the mail room? I know there's more to it then a name in determining life's course. But, a silly name is a definite DISadvantage.

Example: my father's family is VERY Italian (grandparents from Sicily). My Dad's name is Biagio. That's the Italian version of "Ben". He always went by Ben. However, his family nick-nane is "Butch". That's what his Dad always called him. His Mom always called him "Benny Boy".

He was a VERY successful businessman (retired). He was a business consultant. Now, how successful do you think he would have been if his ACTUAL name was Butch? Once he meets someone and gains their trust he can say, "call me Butch". But, having a more professional sounding name may open more doors.

Same goes for Rocko. Nothing inherently WRONG with the name. It's just more appropriate as a nick name. Go with a more traditional name as the REAL name to allow more access to people who may have preconceived negative ideas associated with a name associated with tough guy personas. Rocko just calls to mind a guy working as a mob hit man or the driver for the crime boss, "hey Rocko, pull the car around.". As oppposed to the guy asccepted as a rhodes scholar. Does this sound natural, "and the winner of the Harvard scholarship is Rocko"?

At least if you are going to call your kid that, spell it "Rocco", like the MLB outfielder (formerly TB Rays, now Red Sox)

+1 for at least spelling it Rocco - if you must actually go with the name.
