WHY CAN'T THEY BE THE SAME???

The damn things last so long that by the time you change them technology has changed.

You diligently look on the box and think, yes, that's a 60W equivalent, just like the old one. Well, I've just changed a 60W (11W) bulb in the landing light for another 60W (11W) bulb and the bloody house has been lit up that well beams were cutting through the curtains and beginning to smoulder the car opposite.

So, changed now to a 40W (8W) bulb I found in the back of the cupboard. Now the 40W is giving the same light as the old 60W!

    They make me so MAD!

Rant over. I just had to share and everyone in the house is asleep.

Show me a shred of evidence that the new light bulb will be delivered.

It's not just me then? It drives me mad!

Last year the local B & Q changed their supplier as well, all of a sudden the living room (4 wall lights, 1 had gone) was completely out of kilter and you couldn't see the bloody tv as you had to squint due to the brightness of the same wattage bulb from one!

I believe what's happened here is the aged bulb has grown dimmer over time, slowly enough that you haven't noticed. Same as car headlamps, the halogen bulbs in them grow dimmer as they age, and that's how some of the eBay sellers are able to sell "super bright" replacement bulbs and get away with good reviews. Not many people compare them to brand new bulbs, just the old ones they took out.

At least you seem to have gotten the same colour temperature. I have one room that has a "cool white" CFL with instant start paired with a "warm" CFL with delayed start. It's always jarring walking into that room at night.

I usually look at the lumens rather than the wattage, it's a more direct measure of light output. Probably not printed on the bulb itself though so unless you saved the box you're SOL as far as matching goes.

Anybody else use the 'daylight' bulbs? I really dig those compared to the old yellow ones.

This is mostly due to the disposition of LED around the bulb itself. Some better companies use fewer LED dies and a lens to diffract the light to a wider angle, some others use several small and cheap LEDs for a dimmer light, but same power. It all comes down to the power consumed by your bulb, not the 'light quality' that it is producing. Lumens is already better, but with several light sources (LEDs) in your bulb, this is getting complicated to calculate as opposed to a single light source: halogen, incandescent, etc.

I mostly use recessed lighting, and I wanted a true halogen colour, not a pure yellow or white one. From all I've tried, SORAA bulbs are the best with a CRI (colour rendering index, ability to reproduce an exact colour) from 80% to 95% down to 2700K. They can achieve this since they are making their LED dies themselves. They are also dimmable from like 2% to 100%. Not cheap though, I paid like 30$ a bulb, but wouldn't go back to whitish cheap ones now that I found them.
