As others have indicated BlackBerry desktop is probably the best option. However, it's my recollection that there's also a 'device swap' option baked into BB OS that copies most critical data to / from the microSD card. Additionally, if you (or your friend) use BlackBerry Protect, that also preserves contacts, SMS data etc., and can be used to transfer/restore between devices. Hopefully, this is an reasonably accurate reflection of your miscellaneous options, and not 'fake news' ;)
BDM (Blackberry Desktop Manager) is an ease of use. Install it and connect your 9780 first, type it password and so on, and it will take your 9780 as the device in use. (make a full back up here). Then connect the 9900 in and it will ask if you want to switch device to your 9900. Or choose in the Device list (menu on the left hand side). Answer all the questions, make your choice of contents to be transferred, follow the on screen instruction and that would be it. I've been using this to move between my BBOS phones.
And as others mentioned, you will need Win7 or under. Win10 is a hit or miss. I've got BBLink working well on the Win10 work-issued laptop but not on the personal one. So I've kept an old Win7 laptop for BDM and BBLINK.

Transition from non-touch 9780 to half touch 9900 might prove frustrating. If she's not accustomed to that big "zero force, zero displacement" 2.8" capacitive touch target covering half the front of 9900, she might find it more hindrance than help, imo. ???? After all these years, I still detest touch interface, myself. Lol.
In fact, my "smart guys" cobbled a certain lock app to shut down the touch UI while permitting PKB operation. Down side is it needs to be manually implemented after every battery swap. Something too easily forgotten. As a backup, we employ an app called Bulbera Auto Lock v1.0. Typically set to unlock from simple "Back" button press. Helps prevent butt dials, etc, at least. Fwiw.
Does anyone know where MemoPad files are stored on the 9900? I can't find them anywhere. I could do the old "copy-and-paste" way to transfer the info in those files into a Doc-To-Go file, but there must be a more efficient way.
I still use my 9900 as my primary phone. I do carry a second device now which is a....CURVE 9300! That's even more out-dated! Ha ha. But I love it because the battery lasts f.o.r.e.v.e.r. and the phone is so light it's barely noticeable. It has only a few functions for me, though - it is now my Kindle e-reader and memopad. Advanced OS and LED works great on it, too. There is nothing better than carrying around two phones I can't even feel in my pocket!
I'm a pack rat, and I have up-to-date modern cell phones at home, too, but I always seem to go back to these old legacy phones which I prefer to all the new glass slabs, despite their many advances.
It's too bad they didn't include Docs to Go under the forwarding option available in MemoPad.
If you have fewer than 50 memos, you can transfer them to certain apps and cloud services via memotoo.com for free (or you can subscribe and transfer more notes).
Alternatively, you could sign up for a free two-week trial of companionlink, and sync all of your memos to Outlook, Palm Desktop (yeah, THAT Palm Desktop) or a number of cloud/email services.
You can also transfer memos to older versions of Outlook using BB Desktop.
I don't know where the memo database file is located. I suspect -- but don't know for sure -- that its not accessible to users.
I've been looking for a 9300 for my collection. There are a couple of new ones on eBay but so shipping outside US. What a waste.

The Curve (9320) is my favourite BIS-phone for its small size. I have one in the car as a 'car-phone.' My main phone transfers calls to it when I turn it off (carrier feature). Nice clock. :-)
Just swapped my SIM card from my Q10 back into the 9900 and fired her up for the weekend. Always puts a smile on my face.
It's a pity that the 9900 (and BIS) doesn't play better with ActiveSync and the MS-Exchange servers we use at work. I really need the more comprehensive sync options offered by ActiveSync (as is available on BB10) – but at the weekend I'm happy to be more constrained as to what I can do with my work email :)
I've got a 9320 already and a 9315 which is a North American / T-Mobile equivalent. A 9300 would complete the Curve series for my collection, less the CDMA variant.
And yes, I like them for the size. Fit any pocket and always are reliable if only call and text are needed.

Tmobile has a great deal , $3 per month for 30 minutes of talk/text. No data, but that can be added. This is great for a legacy blackberry used as backup. I'm not sure if BIS would work on it, though. Would probably have to use logicmail via wifi, which the 9300 does have, unlike older blackberry curves.
I’ll be curious to test this out....
BlackBerry Motion now available through SaskTel in Canada

Anyone know where I can find a downloadable JAD file for Kobo or a decent ereader for 9900? I don't care much for Ypub, it's too slow.
Do you already have Kindle? It's in the working and dead apps thread stickied in this forum.

Just now loaded my Key1 with a third party "Keyboard Browser" from "play store"... Despite having to admit using a professionally embarrassing name like "PLAY store" (same complaint I had with letting clients see us using a PLAY book... Lol), the gargantuan thing finally supports shortcuts that SHOULD have been OEM, imo. ... INCLUDING "k" for bookmark!! And "t" for top, "b" for bottom. "I" for zoom in, "o" for zoom out, etc, etc, ... Clearly devved by someone favoring appreciation for BB PKB experience. Encouraging. Heartbreaking that it seems to have taken a third party dev to restore "no brainer" BB features that BB devs themselves didn't. Lol. Now, if I can just get something resembling toolbelt to help tame this gargantuan phablet. AND, find something resembling comfort with exposing my contact db to "google snooping"... Lol.
Meanwhile, 9900's mature experience continues showing youngsters what Professionalism looks like... :)
Just checked... Kindle Reader still works on my 9930... Fwiw.
There was a thread around here somewhere when the developer started working on that browser. He's definitely a BlackBerry fan.
As for keeping your contact db away from Google snooping, I'm testing CompanionLink's software right now. It's not cheap, but it may provide the offline sync capabilities you need with your Android (USB or local WiFi sync).
The latest version (v. 8) has removed BBOS support, but would work with your Android just fine. The previous version (v. 7) supports syncing to the 9900, and still seems to work well, at least via USB sync. I haven't tried the wireless sync with the 9900 yet because I doubt I can get my Bold on the same network as my laptop at work. My employer has separate employee and public WiFi, and they don't support OS7 anymore. If I can buy a license for CompanionLink and use it with the old version, I will. I'm just waiting for a response from the sales department on that question.
If it works, I'll be returning to my Bold 9900 as my regular device again. I've been using my phone less and less during the day, with the exception of listening to podcasts when driving, so it's not like I need to be hauling the Passport everywhere.
Put it in your front pocket and bend over to tie your shoelace ;)
Haha... Finding a pocket to fit is the challenge... Lol. The thing is SOoo ridiculous. Imo. It would be different if I could identify WHAT, precisely, those ridiculous dimensions contribute to my use case. Counterproductive, in my case. Of course we're stuck with having to utilize consumer products targeting a juvenile "size envy" culture, imo. Professionalism seems to be an endangered concept, imo. Lol.
Now that two handed "hand" sets should be called "hands" sets that have outgrown pockets, what's next? Wheels for carrying? Step ladders to reach "send" ?? Ultimately clearance lights? Oversize permits and escort cars?? Lol. Better watch clearance heights under bridges... Haha...
K1's ridiculous size is marginally tolerable precisely because it's in my hand so rarely during the day. Thanks to 99's heavy lifting.
Meanwhile, six year old 99 continues showing size envy juveniles how professionalism is done. ;)
Sadly, too little evidence of "Blackberry fans" at BB itself, these past 5-6 yrs. Imo.
I don’t think many people under 20 would even know what a Blackberry is anymore.
These jumbo "hand" sets must be why God invented cargo pants.
Seriously.
When it's time to "dress for success," it's always the Bold in my pocket. There are some things I really like about my new LG V20 main squeeze, but the work required to lock it down from The Goog and the way it hangs in my suit pants pocket are not among those things...
Haha, unfortunately, I don't think many people under (or over) 20 would even know what Professionalism is anymore... Lol.
Those of us seeking pro grade tools obviously represent too small of niche, compared with more "play oriented" $$$. We're stuck with innovating creative strategies for leveraging "play toys" into "Pro tool" service. Possible, but not optimal, imo. Poor prospect for communications efficiency, globally, imo. Oh well... Pop/rock is where $$$ are. Those of us with more symphonic tastes just have to find ways to "like" it. Lol.
Yep. And when it's time to deliver successful performance, it's always the Bold in my hand. ;)
I too frequently work with, around and for, so many folks who've just accepted that "everyone" must compromise the progress at hand while stepping aside to occupy both hands, both eyes and both brain hemispheres replying to a simple SMS... Lol.
I, right now, am in line boarding a flight, briefcase in hand... While a colleague has stepped aside, briefcase on floor, in reply to the same simple SMS conversation... I'll be seated before he's even boarded. Multiply that single example by millions of times per hr and one begins to appreciate how much inefficiency "the market" has grown to accept!
Mobile communications is something we will all do throughout our lives! Just as well strive to do it efficiently! Imo. ;)
Here he comes... Lol.
-- and it's _performance_ that keeps those paychecks rolling in. Mama appreciates a certain standard of living..! :D
HAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAA...!!
