What a great and fulsome explanation. Thank you very much, Lenze, I will be making a note of this, as I have many other things in this thread, and Shuswap's BBOS Without BIS thread.

It might be a while until I get my 9900 back (a few weeks yet perhaps) so that will five me time to learn and get sorted as much as possible, beforehand.

First thing I need to do is talk to my carrier.

I'm not that knowledgeable about service books TBH but a quick search tells me they're 'like drivers' your provider sends to your phone when you get BIS. For practical purposes, you need it for email.
As for your 'addendum': yes. You'll need the books, but 'the thing' isn't always necessary. As I understand from Ralph, he doesn't need to bother with it when re-inserting the sim into the 9900, and I'm sure he's not the only one.

What I would do: put a sim in your phone, get BIS from your provider, and set up your email account(s). If everything works as it should, you'll receive a message (send to said accounts, one per email account) from 'Activation Server', saying your set-up has been succesful. You won't need to bother with service books.

However, if not, you can have the books send to your phone manually. So, it's a trouble shooting thing really, meant to receive the Activation Server message in case you didn't already.

Just in case you need to, it's simple: Options > Device > Advanced System Settings > HRT Editor, press menu button & choose 'Register now'.

This ^^^ but the 'drivers' are really just configuration files for various programs, including email, MMS, the browser, etc.

I guess my USB port is shot. When plugged in I get this message and no "lightning bolt" over the battery gauge indicating it is charging.

Fortunately there are still 2 other ways I can charge, the desktop POD charger and my wall charger.

I'm just curious everyone talks about syncing calendars and how absolutely essential it is for them to do this. I guess I don't really understand what is involved with syncing calendars. What exactly is this what does it do? Is it not possible to have a private device and simply add the events? I just don't get it.
Hey Ralph - calendars and contacts are a core item of BlackBerry. I sync 3 calendars, including a google calendar with 4 people in my family, the only way I can keep up with all of the goings-on. We have a standing joke now, "Wasn't in the calendar ...!"

My 9930 stopped syncing calendars as well as contacts, with well over 600 contacts I had to go through my Q10 to manually update the last few months of the 9930.

Well one thing is for sure, you have a VERY close family then, closer than mine

If it is major important I just make a note on my paper wall calender. I have too much love for this device to stop using it, even after the demise of Whatsapp.

    But we will see ;p

I'm back on my Q10 for now.
forced to use my Q10 I've started to appreciate that device and some of the advantages of BB10 much more than when I first purchased it.
... but for now my SIM card remains in the Q10 (after several weeks).
    Sporting the Q10 full time as well - 9930 as a back-up.

Need the calendar share to stop the double and triple booking - nothing bothers me more than getting caught in the middle!?!

I would still be using my Bold if it weren't for the google sync issues. So far so good on BB10. Would recommend the Q10 but think Whatsapp is going away there too.

Maybe the next PKB BB will run the android with a BB7/10 like skin to convert some more.

Sorry - yeah that's why I have the stand alone battery chargers for both of my phones. My pod charger was unreliable (had the partial charge bug).

Were you ever able to get the stand alone?

I did have a standalone charger from 2013 and I bought it that year when I had the 9790, here it is in the photos, still use it but at least I have these two methods to still charge. However 9900:Resurgence of popularity!-img_1471641793.391549.jpg9900:Resurgence of popularity!-img_1471641805.957236.jpgmy concern would be what if I ever need a software update via a computer or if some point I want to sell this 9900. I guess I could always get a USB port installed at my electronics place if I had to.

I have both of these as well. I find that the 99xx version needs at least a 1 A charger before it will work properly. I use the Playbook charger for that.

Ok so an observation: I can't believe this, I have been on my 9900 for most of the day and I an on 11 hours without a battery swap. the indicator did just turn yellow however.

I wonder if it could be related to the wifi where I am, maybe because the signal is a little weaker? Weird man.

This is the new battery I got off Amazon in February and the only thing different it has been through lately is that it sat full for a few days before I used it.

Iphone 5C would have died 6 hours ago!

It's especially key if you have someone else -- an administrative assistant -- dropping appointments onto your calendar.

Actually just this evening I put my sim card back in my 9900, and got all nostalgic for that track pad and magical keyboard. After 30min or so where I was thinking that maybe I'll go back to being a Bold Adventurer I noticed a red line across my test photos it appears that all pictures taken on this unit have the same problem. Shame, now I have 2 dysfunctional 9900s I think the camera unit is soldered onto the motherboard so swapping the good for bad is unlikely to be very practical.
So for now it's back to the Q10 again while I decide whether some higher force is trying to tell me it's time to move on

red line? Never heard of that before. The camera has been great on my 9900 and in fact it was my 9780 that had to have the camera module changed 3 times!! The longest it lasted was 7 months between changes, but it got pricy.

I wonder if you google "red line on Bold 9900 Camera" is anyone else having that problem??

I don't think so, looking back at earlier pictures I took with this 9900 all have this thin red line all the way through the frame. My original 9900 camera was trouble free (from 2012) so I suspect that it's this second handset that has a problem.

I was just updating the working and dead apps list, and remembered Ralph mentioning that LINE Messenger is glitchy.

Does anyone here have any recent experience with the WeChat app? Does it work?

Yeah I saw the WeChat app under App World's new heading "Get Social" and was going to ask about it.

Line would freeze up badly for me on the 9900. It worked great on the iphone but I dumped it because whatsapp works perfectly on both platforms.
