Watched the opening ceremony for the first time ever. Guess I'm not up on the criteria for having an Olympic team - Puerto Rico, Guam and American Samoa all have teams, but they're US territories.

Here's to a great Olympics, and go USA!

First Olympics I remember watching was '96 Atlanta, with Michael Johnson and his golden shoes.

Favorite Olympic moment was the 4x100m men's freestyle swim relay, with the most awesome American victory of the last two decades. I still go back and watch the replay of it from time to time.

It's time to abandon the world tour of the Olympics. It only financially ruins countries that choose to host it.

Pick a spot in Greece. Build stadiums, build hotels and dorms, and proper infrastructure.

Then cart everyone off to there every 4 years.

Better yet, why have the whole games every 4 years? Why not have them all the time, but have separate events 4 years apart. That way people can go see the events that they choose.

I saw that suggestion on another blog. I think it's a great idea. Being permanent would help the Greek economy and be more true to the original Olympic Games. It would also bring stability and familiarity to the venues.

As for countries hosting the games. So long as there is a long list who choose to, I see no problem with the current system.

Michael Phelps continues to amaze me. I won't be surprised if there's not another swimmer in my lifetime as dominant as he has been.
