Gimme an app that is as functional as xplore(file manager) for symbian/android. You may take 240hours for that.

I see lots of people wanting to code for the PB (me included). Innovatology, KermEd, why don't you start a BBM group where we call all gather and learn?

what dev environment is best for beginners?
Personally I'd say webworks. You can make a really basic app using HTML, then learn CSS to make nicer UIs, then learn JavaScript to do the most basic programming you can do on PlayBook, then if you need something more complicated you have the basic structures as a leg-up for learning to use the NDK

I see lots of people wanting to code for the PB (me included). Innovatology, KermEd, why don't you start a BBM group where we call all gather and learn?
I would definitely join this. Perhaps set up some "FAQ" lists, share pictures of iconography, etc.

Wow, a lot of negative responses about his app in 24hours. Please feel free to post links to the apps you built from scratch. In any amount of time.

Well, the app was submitted after doing a few tweaks & optimisations on Sunday. In total it took about 19 hours. Read the Twitter transcript, comments and notes here:

A PlayBook app in 24 hours (or less)

OP I see a bit of negativity and skepticism towards your app in less then 24 hours.

I on the other hand view this as a very prudent sign....If I'm not mistaken RIM is trying to allow developers a rapid development environment with very powerful tools. I trust that RIM is fully committed to having the best apps, tools and turn around time in the business. I believe this will become a reality very soon....I hope others share this same opinion, as my observations are revealing this as truth.

I think Handster is writing theirs in 15 minutes, or they appear to look like that about all the time they put into them.

How difficult is it to write an app?
what kind of knowledge is needed?

I work at a community center and would like to write an app that helps us keep attendance (and then i can push them to buy a pb to use it!)
But i have ZERO knowledge of this stuff but am very good with doing everything else computer wise and am a quick learner.

If i can get this done in time for the free playbook then it would be perfect for them (as they are a non-profit... a Boys and Girls Club)

I generally make an app in 24 hours.
They are made in Qt though so they work on Playbook, Windows/Linux/Mac, Symbian, Meego, Android and iOS all at the same time.

Fixing up bugs and adding features continues for a few weeks following though. Features can be added on for years depending on the app.

The funny thing is that Qt has TIFF support built-in. So you could make a Qt TIFF-viewer/convertor that works on all the platforms mentioned above (Playbook included) in under 5 hours (including menus and images).
The challenge here was using AIR which necessitated using ANE and the pre-existing libtiff library. Most of the time was probably spent on getting the AIR->libtiff communication done which would have been free in Qt.

I said in an earlier post...
"If it's as good as Files & folders and if I have a use for it then I will give it a try."

Well, it seems you have created another app of use to me. We have many early CADD archives in TIFF so this should enable us to view them on our PB.
Will there be a trial? 24-48 hours to test it should suffice.

    Good Job!

It took a while, but the app has been approved by App World and is available here:

TIFF file image viewer for PlayBook

The delay was probably due to BlackBerry's recent promo and the OS 2.0 release. App World had no issues.

Let me know what you think! Here are some screen shots:
