We need an app for playing .mvk movies.

I hope that the developers are working on it.

you'll need a bigger playbook too then :P or a working USB host if MKV comes aboard through some app.

I think my 64GB can take it.

The hardware already supports high profile H.264 out of the box. Just a matter of supporting the .mkv container and hopefully it will and soon. In the meantime, I just convert them to .mp4 which takes less then 10 mins. It plays beautifully on the playbook and hdmi out.

It has issues with some avi's especially ones I have joined together.

I also use XenonMKV to convert DTS to AAC but leaving the video quality in its original form.

It is a great software. My Core i7 980X processor of my desktop convert my .mkv file to .mp4 very quickly.

I don't think that's a good idea for playing movie on PB. 14GB is way TOO BIG- at most 2 movies for a 32GB Playbook tab? Ridiculous.

I worked out a set of a/v settings when converting mkv for Playbook after a few trials. It converts a 100min mkv to 2-3GB and still keep very good video quality when playing on PB:

    Video
    Video Codec- H.264
    Video Format- .mp4
    Resolution- 1280*720
    Video Bitrate – 1500kbps
    Frame Rate – 30fps

    Audio
    Audio Codec- AAC
    Audio Bitrate- 128kbps
    Sample Rate- 44.1khz
    Audio Channel- Stereo

If the .mkv is a commercial format you may want to ask where you get the movies if they have suggestions.

I am not an expert on the video stuff, but I am assuming a lot of these .mkv movies are coming from unlicensed sourses. Because of this, I suspect Rim would never approve a .mkv player for distribution to its playbooks, as it would leave them open to lawsuits from the media conglomerates. Even if a side load method was found, I am sure Rim would break that functionality in a future software update, one again to avoid problems with the copyright owners of the media in the mkv file.

Wonderful. As an aside, someone has created an app (it appeared this morning) to allow the playbook to play flash movies that are with the extension .flv.

Slowly but surely the capabilities are being expanded. Great news.

I just stream movies from my PC to playbook via the browser, so space/size is non-issue [unless I want to watch them outside my house]. Just installed apache and browse to http://desktop-pc/movie.mp4, no buffering over local wifi (g). Just can't stream the .mkv files.

Im using FoxReal Video Converter for MKV for video files (as well as FoxReal DVD and Blu-Ray converter for DVDs) and the tools work great. They have selections for various HD resolutions specifically for the Playbook.

Even with the MKV container support in place, there is still the problem of RIM not having a Dolby license for DTS/AC3. Out of curiosity, how many .mkv files do you have with the audio in a non-Dolby format? It's conceivable that direct HDMI output of the bitstream would be allowable without a license... but Legal depts would have to figure that one out.
