seriously, is there absolutely no FREE messenger for playbook.
how can I communicate with someone other than email???
as a free solution - The native Facebook client does have a working Chat...
and... windowslive.com / messenger.live.com works fine as well... log-in with your Live iD - and chat with your friends....
and I guess you can find several Flash/web based solutions out there - While we all wait for other native solutions...

Seriously, not yet. But this should come as no surprise, as they've been saying there wouldn't be one for months. They're working on taking BBM to the next level; for the time being, the bridge will have to suffice.
I have just got my application launched on playbook called MyFunPeeps which would help you keep in touch with gtalk, msn live and facebook contacts, but I am afraid its not free.
The problem which I faced was that Playbook do not have a strong customer base hence I would not be able to earn back the time time I spent developing this application so that I can provide better features.
The application is 1.99$ .. i am sure it wont burn you pocket.
The playbook is actually a BETA tablet for BB10 OS. So yes, the playbook sucks now but wait until BB10.It will blow your mind away.
The PlayBook is wifi or bridge...as least the current version. Bridge gives you BBM. And there are 3rd party apps for messaging, but you are limited to wifi or tethering.
If you think it sucks then you didn't do your research, don't own one, don't know how to use it, or are a troll.
regretted buying Playbook.no skype, no bbm, no bloody apps
IM+ is a multi-chat aggregator that does everything that is possible independantly (considering some like Skype just refuse interfacing video with third parties).
It very wisely proposes a free version, based on a port from android, and the same version compiled for your OS, so faster, that you have to buy after fully testing the free one.
This app, that you can try, will do all you wish except what I said earlier, like skype video, but this is neither their fault nor RIM: it's skype decision.
If you disagree with skype, well, do as I do: abandon closed, proprietary systems.
