Microsoft working on web-based Skype for Browsers
nice ! i can create it into a *lookalike* app with webworks :P
Beat me to it, was just about to post this same thing.
You mean just compile it into an app rather than use through the browser? That would be more than a little awesome! :P
you understand it ! i displays & acts & show up like an app, but it will be displayed (in dev. langue) in the browser with no upperbar/options and the name will be different !

HTML5 is the future and apps won't matter when that becomes standard.
Guess which tablet has the best HTML5 compliant browser...
I hate to bust the bubble.
RIM's OS currently denies access to the PB's camera for WEB access.
A WEB based Skype may be 'voice' (?) and 'IM' (likely) like IM+.
MS SKYPE will likely be incorporated into their upcoming MS WINDOW's tablet OS.
Unless emulators are make, other maker tablets (RIM, Apple, Google Android) will not benefit.
So the golden question is, uh, when? I wanna throw up BB gang signs and high five too, but RIM's road map is becoming interminably long.
What about www.aol.com/av/ ? Camera/mic are working good for video chat on this one why not on html5 skype ? unless microsoft restrict access to pb i see no reason to not work.

b b b bb unit!
Think that one is Flash, not HTML5.
Yeah you'r right, but if flash website can access webcam html5 would probably be able to do the samething no ?
Not if RIM have programmed it to allow access to camera for Flash and not for HTML5.
Its very interesting. I think as time goes on and the mobile world develops, we will see many more of these types of apps. You make it once and it really is available to virtually every platform. Win win for everyone i think. The PB is developed enough for this. The PB is very future oriented and minded I find.
Sounds very promising...
I think all in all it doesn't matter if HTML5 on PB is allowed to get at the camera, after all the whining (and I'm not trying to be insulting, I fully admit to whining about Skype), if there is no Skype app when this is released then RIM SHOULD make sure it would have access (unless of course, as it's been noted, Skype actually blocked the PlayBook), I mean Skype can choose not to make an app, and they could even choose to block the PlayBook from this web browser version, but if they don't, it's RIMs business if they want to allow HTML5 access to the cameras and microphones.
They already allow Flash access to both cameras... So I don't understand why HTML5 would be restricted... Ultimately it is up to Skype... Only time will tell...
Hey, trelawrence -- are you getting a PlayBook? :p
Want to replace one, yes. Don't really care about too many apps, but I am fairly well invested in the Android ecosystem, though, so keeping a PB did not make sense at the earlier.
Now, if they get a decent cross-platform videoconferencing utility, I can justify it for work. I can do so on my primary device already, but would prefer to do in on a device like a PB.
IOWs, I am looking for any excuse to avoid getting an Android tab, which I am not hot on for some reason. The iPad I admit to liking, but the price is prohibitive for me. PB is good hardware, and I will be using it for limited purposes.
....not to burst anyone's bubble but don't be too surprised if the web version locks out mobile browsers not based upon a browser with a close desktop sibling. People should also not expect to see this anytime soon. Microsoft has been running Skype products on a pretty long development cycle even for their own platforms. They will almost certainly push the internal Skype projects for the new version of Office, WP8, Windows 8, Windows 8 RT, Windows 7, and Windows Live Skydrive. BTW, my bet is the unspoken part of this is that it may be part of the next iteration of Skydrive after the one due out in a few months. If that is the case, it would be on a 2013 time table for general release.
Still no camera access in 2.0.1.358 in browser according to html5test.com :(
