Chk out the Vernier app in appworld.
Pretty handy if you don't have a caliper around..

This looks cool. Does it automatically detect the object on the screen or do you have to try to line it up by hand?

I dont think it will detect any object on the screen other than fingers, a capacitive stylus or something similar, since its a capacitive screen...

I, too, noticed it has gone up in price if the first price mentioned was correct. According to the app info, you "gently" place the object on the screen and then measure it.

It has three "+" choices and three "-".
You can select the choices as per the amount you want the caliper to move. The slowest moves it by its least count so you can fine tune. Its still going to be visual but it will at least give a decent reading for initial measurements.
I haven't tried to verify any readings with an actual vernier to check what accuracy I can get visually.
