Touch and hold on the icon until all your icons start to move, then press the little trashcan in the upper left corner of the icon for the app you want to remove. Touch any open space to get out of that mode.

i had the ICS launcher and deleted it in that way and now it is gone.
although, i keep getting the mail notifications sometimes
