So anyone find a good PDF reader app that can open large PDF files without choking? Also looking for a good note taker app. Something that records audio as you type on it. Would love to see SoundNote on the PB.

Ditto on both of these. These are probably two of my highest priorities for the Playbook. (Followed closely by Evernote, DropBox, and an e-reader that will take sideloaded epub files.)
I've certainly been encouraged by how well the Adobe Reader for Playbook works. Given that and all the linking arms between RIM and Adobe, you would expect a good Acrobat Pro style release for Playbook (and some 3rd Party knock-offs after that).
Exactly how does it work well?
Adobe has put zero effort into the Reader app for the PB. Zero.
How does it work well? It flawlessly and quickly opens pdf's and displays them clearly and allows scrolling. It is a reader, not an editing or creating program.
I guess I'm used to Acrobat Reader for PC, which doesn't do much either. That is why Adobe sells and people buy Acrobat Pro or Workshare to do more with pdf's. The PB Reader is free, so I assume the same approach will shortly follow. There are cheap or free PC work-around programs and a lot of other programs have some pdf functionality, but not like what you get for pay from Adobe.
Remember that a lot of PDF files are several hundred pages long and use bookmarks to sort information. The PB Adobe Reader doesn't support these sp yoi are left scrolling through hundreds of pages to find what you need.
not only that but the application doesn't even remember what page you were last on.
we need an app like GoodReader on iOS. that app was dope!
Doesn't open large files.
Can't search.
Can't add bookmarks.
Can't copy text.
Can't highlight.
Can't copy graphics.
The PC version can do these thing so the comparison is flawed and inaccurate.
I had no problem opening a 6,000 page 74MB PDF on the Playbook.
Unfortunately because it won't even read bookmarks, let alone let you add them, browsing through such a large document is next to impossible.
Add me to the list of users that have tried opening large pdfs with the Adobe Reader and had a very slow/unresponsive experience.
I just wrote to the good folks at GoodReader (an iOS-only PDF app) to ask them if they ever plan to port their app to Playbook and to tell them that their is an absolute void when it comes to a good PDF reader.
anyway, if some of you want to take the time to drop them a line, it could only strengthen our cause.
GoodReader has bookmarking, remembers what page you were on, highlighting (complete with color wheel!), notes, circling, handwriting/doodling.. in a nutshell, it is GREAT and one of the few apps I truly miss from my iPad days.

Now about note taking apps... I've talked about the absolute dearth of good stylus-based note taking apps on the playbook in other threads, and I have to say I'm really happy with the direction SKIT is taking. it's a bit pricey compared to other options (and twice the price of the still vastly superior Penultimate on iOS) but I'm glad to report that the app has been made a LOT more usable thanks to the most recent update. strokes are a lot more precise, which makes writing smoother.
now it still feels a bit sluggish, and compared to Penultimate it lacks features (like the ability to move, duplicate and delete pages within a notebook) but it's still the best option on the App World for now.
I can't find this app "SKIT" on app world. The search comes up with no results.
Ditto! Where is this "Skit" ? I think a free hand stylus note take is what I really need.
Edit: Never mind, just found another thread where the developer pulled the App due to problems.

I would re-buy a Playbook tomorrow if a PDF annotating app like PDF Expert for iPad was available. I need to be able to add signatures, bookmarks, sync to Dropbox and email "flattened" documents.
I am also in the group of people that cannot open larger PDF files without the Adobe Reader application freezing when attempting to swipe to the next page. And the one in particular I was trying to view was only 60 pages at 2.35 MB.
1) Fix the freezing bug
2) Add bookmarks
3) Add highlighting
4) Add copy text
5) Add search
Do those 5 things and I won't ave any complaints at all about Adobe Reader.
The new HTC Flyer with the pen is just what you described. I am about a month out, then will buy either the HTC or the Playbook if I see an ability to markup pdf.
Now why can't we have a pen like that on the business-oriented PlayBook?
It seems like there is a lack of practical business apps. Everything reviewed seems to be consumer based.
I think there's probably a lot more practical business apps on the iPad.
I bought the PlayBook foolishly thinking it would be more business oriented. It's a great piece of hardware and it's nice being able to show people my facebook photos with it, but it just kind of falls short on everything.
To summarize: make it pro like the tablet is suppose to be.
bookmarks
annotation
sharing
copy and paste
extract figure and text
navigation with memory
It's pretty embarrassing when you're in a meeting and are madly flipping through 40 page documents to find the info you need.
sad to note that zero progress so far for our professional grade tablet.
I send a message to the GoodReader people but I doubt a small iOS only shop like them would expand to PB of all things.
I also sent a quick note to good reader, hopefully if enough of us ask for it they will support an app for us.
WHY NOT mail and request repligo guys, its amongst the fastest and best in rendering scanned text pdf files, and excellent annotation tools, they have apps for blackberry OS but not QNX yet
