Since the latest update (version 1.7.3) the app MovieSrtPlayer is great at providing you with substitles (.srt) for movies.
It has solved the problem of not being able to display and play large size video files.
Oh, on a side note....remember that if you want to get rid of the menu while watching the movie, just use your finger to swipe from the top panel down to the screen midway and the menu will disappear leaving your with unobstructed view of the movie with the subtitles.
