Keep in mind that most developers use the Android OS version to determine whether the hardware is a tablet or a smartphone. Since the PlayBook Android Player runs 2.3, even a working version of Instagram would probably interpret the PlayBook as a smartphone.

Pretty sure that is not true, 4.0 works on both phones and tablets so that would be a terrible way to know. However, 2.3 is not designed for tablets, so whatever method is used to detect whether it's a phone or tablet, it'll detect as a phone.

But besides that, that isn't why the app doesn't work.
