I'm specifically asking because I bought Spider-Man: Total Mayhem and have made substantial progress throughout the game, I want to know if I upgrade or switch devices for whatever reason, that I can maintain my progress.
If you want to switch to another device you need to do a backup + restore with Desktop Manager.
If you just mean an updated OS where your PB lets you know there's a new version then it's no different than installing Windows Updates. Just replaces the components that need to be, no data is lost. The only exception here is a beta OS, if you upgrade to the 2.0 beta there's always a possibility of issues.
