Ive been gone from this forum for like half a year. Whats new for the Playbook? Any fantastic new apps or anything?
All a matter of opinion. Look around, look at app world. What are you looking for?
It was just kind of a general question.
I think the PlayBook had a very slow start (kind of like the Flintstone car at a NASCAR race). It really didn't get off to a good start until 2.0 was released. In the past several months, a lot more apps have been coming out, so there is a lot more you can do with it. I think the development push RIM has been making towards BB10 has helped. Things should really take off once BB10 hits.
With stores selling out of PlayBooks with all the sales that have been going on, I'm wondering if there'll be changes to the attention developers have been affording us as users and the platform itself. Any one have any idea how many units were sold across Canada in the past few weeks?
As for new games, doing an App World search on Union, XLabs, 10tons, Ximad, Polarbit, Electronic Arts, or Gameloft will show you a popular and diverse assortment of goodies.
Of particular note in the past couple of months have been Galaxy on Fire 2, Fantasy Islands, Modern Combat 3, and Bard's Tale.
Been gone half a year your completely up to date.
RIM is like a soap opera nothing changes except maybe new actors but the storyline is always the same.
The price drop has actually made this tablet price accessible to many more users - myself included who was 'die hard' android previously. Many are now seeing the difference & possibility of this system, the hardware & so forth. As i've said in other threads the price drop has helped - and to be honest the duality of playbook + android apps unleashes new potential. People are starting to take notice and I personally feel that RIM can build on this opportunity. Again whilst we remain awaiting BB10 or an official 2.1 RIM can use the growing popularity to push forwards.
A paradigm example of comparison though - the Chrome OS - now available on a limited number of laptops after great hype...does this make Google a failure? Android took a long time to take off / get service - same thing here? What about Windows mobile OS?
Don't write off RIM, bloody well support them...spread the good word about the fantastic PB & let's keep this alive. I won't be giving up on it, and I remain an Android phone user & love the combination! My 2p, bash as you wish.
Did RIM mention that to investors or people who bought the PlayBook? That it is a device for developers?
And I don't blindly hate anything - especially RIM - I am just stating my opinion about their well documented mistakes. Like the PB.
I am sure if RIM had told people that the PB was for developers, then sales would certainly have been different. Even worse. How do you make this stuff up?
And where - BTW - is OS 2.1. You know, for the developers.
Let's say the playbook was never produced since you think it was such a failure, how do you bb10 app ecosystem would be at launch?
I never said the pb was purely a developer device and I don't make stuff up, how about you watch some older video's of heins and other rim tops talking about how the pb is doing and it's agenda, you might just learn a few things.
My feelings about the PlayBook are simple - it distracted RIM dramatically from their core business, making best in class handsets. It cost them time and money. It diminished the brand. PlayBooks - as of the last official statistics from IDC, accounted for less than 1% of sales.
I didn't call the PB a turd. I said "you can't polish a turd" in response to comments like the PlayBook was put out there to get the OS in the hands of the developers. Sorry, that doesn't wash. Sales of the PlayBook have to be disappointing by any measure. They had to write them down and put them in the bargain bin. That is not the sign of a healthy tablet environment.
I have nothing against RIM at all - they have executed poorly in the past, had management issues, changed out the top of the house, missed deadlines and are putting all of their eggs - every single one - on a successful launch of BB 10. I got my first BB in 1999 (a really cool 950) and rode them all the way to the 9900. Which was a year ago.
And now, like everyone else, we wait. And wait. See what is said on the 27th. And then wait.
Lots of apps and games, I use the playbook more than I probably should.
Finally something you said that I can respect...
Whatever man, you cant argue with a person who bases EVERY opinion of theirs on the past and not on current events...
To the OP, love my playbook .. use it all the time.. love having the internet at my portable fingertips and lately the apps/games have been really good.
Don't know about the "turd" comment cause I'm getting a heck of a lot of use out of mine which is certainly easily worth the price I paid for it.
I liked it so much the wife and the kids have one too!
Looking forward to upgrading this badboy to BB10 early next year....:D
I don't think there's a single device, no game console, no PC or laptop, no phone, that I've used more than my PlayBook. It's got my games, internet, tv and movies connected to a large flatscreen, music bluetoothed to a very effective portable room speaker, BB bridged to give me access to everything I need when I bring the PlayBook to meetings (Word to go, contacts, tasklist, calendar). Yeah, I'm a RIM fan. More than that though, I'm a PlayBook fan, because it's replaced almost every device I used to use. And it makes me more popular and desirable, so genetically, it makes sense.
