I agree with your assessment of current "compass" apps. Not only are they hard to use, they are also downright dangerous. True story: Way back in May, I implemented this method of getting a heading in my app. It actually worked quite well but I found out that it's really hard to keep an eye on PB's screen while at the same time pointing the device skyward. And you had to be moving very quickly to make the GPS readings settle down. I dropped the idea of submitting this to App World when I stubbed my toe on a curb. The toenail still hasn't grown back completely. I think more developers should test their creations before asking the public to pay a buck or two for their efforts.
