I am thinking about starting development on a party game that uses the HDMI connection to the TV as a core feature.

Would it be a waste of time b/c no one would buy it with the TV connection requirement?

    Thanks for any feedback.

Wrong, I think it's a great idea and could show off the potential of the PlayBook!

Thats a brilliant idea actually. I have no idea what type of party game to suggest but the concept is great.

Could make it even better by incorporating the camera. Kind of kinect style but for the playbook. But def interested. Let us know as things develop.

At this point, I am thinking of a game show type experience. With the TV used for scoreboards, countdowns, and group activities. The Playbook would be used for the input and interaction.

This would be fun. Would it be free or paid though? Would it be possible (though I'm sure not as fun) to play single player? Would multiple people play at the same time (top half for player 1, bottom half for player 2 in portrait?) or would it be fully turn or team based?

I do believe that the fact you need to buy a certain accessory will harm your sales/downloads, but being the only one to have this type of app should increase sales/downloads enough to compensate, and it wouldn't HAVE to be on the TV, would it?

The Kinect-like thing is a great idea, maybe if enough of us protest RIM will make APIs for that, and we will have the best gaming platform in the mobile universe!!!

I would definitely be interested in such a game, although it sucks for people like me who don't own/can't afford to buy a TV that my PB can connect to with HDMI.

Yeah If I was an app developer, I would create things like this. I also thought of things like this. If you were able to get the TV to display something like the results or whatever, and then have the tablet display something else (leaving it as the main controller), that would be great! At least for a game show type of thing, maybe even Pictionary or something.

This is a completely different thought, but another nice idea is to have the PB as the game display and have BB phones as the controllers/remotes. Ex: The PB could ask everyone connected a question, and then everyone could type/press in their answers on their phones.
    How's that sound, seems possible?

Anyways, seems like a great start to new possibilities!

The HDMI cable is so cheap that it's not a big deal. I wouldn't expect a game like this to be free. I'd gladly pay for what sounds like a great idea!

Since the game is focusing on being a party game, it wouldn't be a single player game at all. As far as pricing, I would imagine the game being $ .99 or free with in game ads. If it got super popular I would probably make a premium edition or integrate in-game purchases for more content or features. My motivation isn't to get rich. I would like to use my Playbook as gaming device with my friends and family. If I make money from the game, it is just a bonus at that point.

Prey521 is correct. The HDMI cable is very cheap to buy and you don't have to connect it to a huge TV. You could connect to your computer monitor if it supports HDMI.

@Venichie The thought of using BB smartphones as controller has definitely crossed my mind and should be possible.

Maybe it's not the cable that is cheap for him/her and maybe it's the tv with an hdmi hookup?

While the HDMI cable isn't expensive, it's ridiculously expensive compared to apps, so the app would essentially be $20 competing against $1-$2 apps if you don't already have the cable. I also wasn't expecting the game to be free, but I wanted to get a vague sense of how much it would be (personally I'd be willing to pay $5 or more if it's a well done game that friends would like).

Sorry to debunk "Number 1" but from compusa or any online outlet, you can grab a micro hdmi cable for $8. So you're looking at $9 if you buy the cable and the app, or $8 total if they do it with the adds. Granted the game would have to be quality to accept the cost, just like any other program. Not to mention if you buy the cable and don't even like the game you get more function from the cable than just said game. So as i agree with the end of your comment about being willing to pay a decent amount for the app if its good, the $20 is far more than you'd actually spend.

But with an online outlet wouldn't you have to pay shipping? Even if you didn't have to pay for shipping, it would still take at least a day or two after you order before you can use the app. But my point wasn't as much about how much it cost as it was about the fact that you have to pay the extra money and either wait a couple of days for shipping or go out to a store, and then never lose the cable, and that this extra work might drive people away. I still say that having the app that is the only one of this type should help sales more than they're hurt by this, but anyway...

Back on topic: Any idea when this app will be ready or if there will be a beta? I would love to see this app out soon, but I understand that it takes time to develop.

i think an HDMI cable is a good thing to have for the playbook anyways.

I like the idea of a party game. It would also be cool to incorporate a blutooth keyboard for the controller.

Multiple playbooks would be cool as well, connect one to the tv as the master, and then any other playbooks can be used as controllers
