Assuming BB10 comes to PlayBook, how will this affect sideloading process for Android apps??
The process itself will not be affected in any way. You will be able to load any signed .bar file onto your device, however, apps that do not comply with BB10 specifications will not run. It is entirely possible that some apps that worked under Tablet OS will fail under BB10.
Buzz:
Will bb10 PHONES also be able to run Android apps, both sideloaded and from appworld (if supported)? Given the fact that it would still have to meet your criteria. I just upgraded the android mapping Nogago app and it now supports maps with contour lines - could be handy on a phone.
Since BB10 is being built over QNX, I dont think there will be any major change.. Android apps will continue to run...
BB10 phones will support Android apps. It is an open question what sideloaded apps will look like on the phones. My app, for example, needs to be rejigged for the BB10 scrren resolutions - buttons and fonts designed for PBs larger real estate are too small on the Dev Alpha device. I suspect that your experience with sideloaded Android apps will vary - they may be just fine or they may not.
You are right.. I recently redid my app to dynamically resize text and content based on the available real estate on the device to make it BB10 ready...
This will work well for the touch screen bb10 device but I'll have to rethink things on the qwerty device. I am displaying a lot of info on-screen and there won't be room on the square screen. Perhaps I'll implement sliding hide-away panels or some such.
thanks for answering buzz!
i would like to suggest one thing though... sideload ONLY free apps (if anything) and buy the other ones. I know a lot of people were trading paid apps at the start and thats how ecosystems die.
We tested nogago Maps on all available Simulators and Dev devices, and have strong evidence that it will continue to work. You will be able to get it at the existing address in Appworld: Free nogago Maps for walking hiking biking - Download nogago Maps for walking hiking biking - Free Apps from BlackBerry App World. We will try to get our hands on a procution device as quickly as possible and update the app when necessary to get it running both on the Touch and the Qwerty device. For the latter the app will be extended to support the keyboard shortcuts that our nogago Outdoor GPS users are familiar with.
Cheers
