You'll only be able to see apps that are supported on your device. The announcement is talking about all BlackBerry Apps, not just PlayBook.

How can such an app use up 1MB? Anyway a hint for Thorsten, next time he should not mention the amount of BB apps, but the number of MBs they take up. I'll help him by submitting a new fart app, with 5000 different farts sampled at 5120 kB/s. Size does matter, after all.

You have to remember this includes ebooks and themes also and there are thousands of those alone.

Also sadly handstar is converting over android apps and alot will be crap like above. You dont even need to own the app probably. Just take and random APK and send it to them and they take care of the conversion and boom you have your app into appworld. Pretty pathetic really

Crappy, I agree ... but how many of the 400,000 Android apps and 500,000 App Store apps do you think are of comparable crappiness? I'd love to see percentages of fairly useless 'novelty' vs. somewhat useful vs. hardcore productivity apps for each platform.

Search the appstore for device on gps maps. Man is there ever a lot of them. I asked around and so far I've heard nothing but bad things about these apps that cost $9.99 plus.

Right, the majority of the 500,000 are nonsense.

But if you have an iPhone or iPad and some company, any company, out there says "we made an app that does X", you have a very high probability that the company's app will work on your iPhone.

That's the bottom line. It doesn't matter if you're talking about a social media service, or a video chat service, or a car manufacturer, or a game, or a financial service, or a social media service, whatever it is, if you hear "app" it probably will work on your iPhone and iPad.

So that's really what matters, but I agree that whole "500,000 apps" (or even "60,000" apps) thing is sort of a silly number now.

Agree. I am pretty sure that people haven't even heard about or seen (let alone used) 99.9% of the 500,000 or 60,000 apps. The app count is useless. Most people need quality not quantity.

So long as App World lacks some major apps (even if it has twice as many apps as iOS and Android combined have), some people will stay away from BB.

Perhaps there should be a separate category for "Great Apps" so people don't have to waste time sifting through the not-so-great ones. Now if only there were an objective way to measure "greatness". Until there is one, I'm afraid we're stuck with the current arrangement where the consumer decides what is "great" based on some unknown and unknowable personal criteria. For this to work properly, there has to be a large and varied selected apps on offer. Is there such a thing as a "great" fart app demonstrating superb graphics and sound and a well-constructed user interface? Not a chance. - but that is only my opinion.

My constitution is too weak to allow me to accommodate your request. Just the thought of recording realistic sounds makes me gag. Also, I think that the hardware is inadequate for this purpose. An on-board aroma-generating chip is required and although I could be wrong, I understand that only Apple and Android devices are so equipped.

As is always the case, RIM is a bit behind the curve when it comes to sensors, advanced chip-sets and associated APIs. I don't think I could bear another 12 months for RIM to get its act together like I had to endure waiting for magnetometer support.
