- Yeah, why pay netflix? If the playbook had a sick torrent program which downloads videos and music to their respective folders. You can just download anything you want for free and watch it anytime.09-12-11 01:34 PMLike 0
- Infact i bought my whole family (5 people) iphones, just so they could have skype and viber, since we are all in different parts of the world. and te video chat is a great added bonus. THAT is what ubiquitous standards do for your platform. People leaning towards getting a PB, but realizing it doesn't have these basic communication programs, might get the platform that everyone else is using just because of the interoperability.
I agree its not optimal and I think RIM should have this features with their next QNX device, but then again, the iphone costs quite a bit more than the PB now so I think you get what you pay for. Personally, I'd rather save almost $1000 by getting 5 playbooks rather than 5 iphone 4s.Last edited by chiefbroski; 09-12-11 at 11:36 PM.
09-12-11 01:46 PMLike 0 - There are plenty of people who dont use netflix or skype...I'm one of them.
In general I think more people would buy the playbook if it was cheaper (not the same price as Ipad2). That was in my opinion a big mistake. Ipad is immensely popular and is all over the place.
Many people don't even know the PB exists.
If more people had the playbook there would be more apps available. But because apps are limited people are scared away.
With BB7 devices on the market and PB "relaunch" with OS 2.0 and a lower price PB should sell better.09-12-11 03:24 PMLike 0 - Just to add to my previous post. I have plenty of BBM buddies. The see my playbook and say it looks great. When i show them the bridge feature and how i can browse with no additional cost they are further impressed. However most say "Wow that's nice but for $500 I can buy an Ipad!"
So i strongly feel the price has scared many people away....including developers.ladybam likes this.09-12-11 03:40 PMLike 1 - I am sure if the price were less some more people would adopt it but how low can rim go before they sell at a loss that won't be made up by selling apps.
I think folks forget getting more in a smaller package can cost more than larger devices where shrinking components is not required.
I think that rim just screwed up somewhat. They released an immature product (there's those cheese and wine commercials) and took a beating in the reviews. But they could never have competed with the apple thingie which just has too much lead, too many apps and great advertising.
A strong second place would be nice but if they don't finish it, it will not happen.
My two cents and that's all it is probably worth.09-12-11 04:56 PMLike 0 - i really like my pb, but there is so much wrong with it. apps are the least wrong. it should not of been released when it was. never ship out a half done product or u will lose your loyality base. fix the OS glitches. get the native products working ang out to clients. listen to your customer and stop sitting on your hands. bb cant help get amazone and netflix off there **** but at least they can.09-12-11 05:02 PMLike 0
- Not to beat a dead horse, but it's not like buying something just for 5 people. I already had a lot going with my iPhone. My friends use viber, what's app and Skype so I was plugged into that Eco system. When I travel, instead of paying the 800-1200$ phone bills I usually got for roaming in Asia and Europe, and yet being restricted with what i could use, I got s Toronto VoIP number which I forwarded my main number to, go buy a 25$ sim, which gives me enough data for days, and have seamless calling without worrying what prefix to dial depending on which country I'm in. Plus I have access to what's app viber etc for calling everyone else that IS on those programs.
The point is I decided to switch my family from blackberry to iPhone/ios because it had all these benefits For me, I was already plugged in, and even if they used a fraction of it such as viber or Skype (which would already make it more than what they used their berrys for), it would make it worth the cost. And that's on top of the sheer simplicity the platform offers.
And the best thing? My mom hates technology, phones computers. Id given up on her ever using a phone for anything beyond email. And yet when I got her the iPhone within one day i got an email from her telling me she loves me. Now THAT is priceless.
Please note, I'm not bashing RIM, they've done slot of great things and can do a lot more, it's just that the iPhone iPad ecosystem has something for everyone, without being perfect at any one particular thing. Hence the sales and appeal to such a large audience. Rim is being perfect at one thing (email) which it failed to deliver in play book, and that's why it has a restricted share. Adding into its ecosystem, bringing its system into parity with others (email, Skype, other apps, etc) and adding some great features will ctainly give them a fighting chance if they want a broader mind share.
Also, you can buy your family 5 playbooks and video chat works great between all of them. The playbook is very protable and has great cameras. I think you're complaining about wanting to video chat on the go with JUST a phone. Let's be honest, it doesn't happen often.

also, it if it took two apps to really drive sales, what does that say about the device :/09-12-11 06:19 PMLike 0 -
Something for everyone > some things for some people
P.s. I was looking for a golf course gps range finder thingamgic, and instead of spending couple of hundred $ on a dedicated one, I just spent 30$ to turn my iPhone, that I always have, into that. That's what I mean by ubiquitous. Somebody out there somewhere is making some kind of niche app that somebody needs on iOS. Yes, they're not all stellar apps, but somewhere somebody just found something they were looking for on their iPad or iPhone while somebody else is scratching their head why they kind find it on the pb. Heck, I looked and looked and looked for a VoIP app for bb for 6 years that I had one, never was able to find it.Last edited by zank; 09-12-11 at 06:29 PM.
09-12-11 06:25 PMLike 0 - I think RIM has got to focus on simplifying all the functionality of the Playbook. Video chatting to pc, wifi calling, instant messaging, etc.... they are all possible on the Playbook. It's just cannot be done by someone without significant knowledge of the Playbook.
The implementation of these functionalities is very important. I think there is a way to beat iOS at its own game by making the Tablet OS even easier to use than iOS. Integrating a sufficient amount of important applications into the OS is something iOS doesn't do. Everything is independent and closed. This creates limitations, redundancies, and inefficiencies when trying to complete a task.
RIM doesn't need Angry Birds or Netflix. That's just a fad that everyone thought was cool because they were told it amazing. Netflix? Honestly, its just not important.
Imagine a QNX tablet OS that had:
-instant messaging notifications,
-easy video chat with incoming call notifications without the app being open,
-universal search,
-a maps/augmented reality app that is done really well,
-a feature-rich documents to go suite,
-picture editing/cropping AND Scrapbook 1.1 integration within the pictures app,
-video editing, youtube/facebook uploading within the videos app,
-dual-frames for two apps open at the same time
-customizable bezel gestures
etc....
It's the features of a mature OS that will help the Playbook. Plus, most of these RIM has the capacity to accomplish. With Android apps working on the Playbook, RIM has done their part in helping developers.
Like just imagine the difference:
NOW: Take a picture using camera, exit camera, open to cropping/editing app you might have paid for, find picture, edit picture, done.
SHOULD BE: Take picture, Select Edit, edit picture, done.
An app should be for special functionality, not basic. Also, you don't beat the iPad by surpassing it in functionality, you beat it by doing things better than it and making things easier to use.BuzzStarField likes this.09-13-11 12:21 AMLike 1 - Skype is the most popular Application used worldwide. Playbook without these application is really bad. I would also recommend skype and a Adobe reader09-13-11 03:15 AMLike 0

Folks have used Amazon's Cloud access (limited functions) and while the Android Player beta was working (no longer working) there was a Kindle Android app that folks seem to have liked.Bromo33333 likes this.09-13-11 12:20 PMLike 1 - And what makes you believe the above is at all attainable? If RIM were the kind of company that could deliver what you've just described, why haven't they done it already? This is the problem with all of the "what X company needs to/will do" arguments. . .none of them explain why the company hasn't done those things already. It's like when you read that RIM needs "better marketing;" how many times will people claim this before realizing that there's never going to be better marketing?
Seriously, look at the bigger picture, programmers had issues with the QNX code and adopting it with the email client. There are reports everywhere that QNX isn't playing nicely with email, and thats from both the QNX phones and the playbook. So before you keep spouting off your negativity in EVERY thread you can, shut your F@#$ing mouth or stop typing and think and be in someone else's shoes!!

WE ALL KNOW how much you are disappointed and you make that felt in about 99% of your posts! SHUT UP ALREADY!!
As far as the OP, Skype and Netflix are not the be all and end all of deal breakers for a tablet. I can say with confidence, Netflix will either take its time with making an app or it won't even come out at all. It took them a long time to get an ipad app made.
Skype will come out eventually, but don't hold your breath on it, it will be a very slow release after the NDK is out.09-13-11 12:30 PMLike 0 - And what makes you believe the above is at all attainable? I personally find it enlightening to hear the desires of people to make RIM a different/better company. It makes me hopeful for the community and for RIM.Last edited by Bromo33333; 09-13-11 at 12:40 PM.

Because there is a 99% chance they won't. Because it takes time and lots of work. RIM has cleverly focused on adding language support, improving bridge functionality, video chat, bridging data over for all applications, modular updates and implemented these very well. I'm simply suggesting things they should be working on in the future, or plan to work on in my opinion for the playbook. I know why they haven't done it so far and I'm not complaining about it. I think they are doing great work, although we all know much more needs to be done for it to best other operating systems. I'm just sharing my ideas.
By stating what I feel would be great improvements here, I'm not expecting them to accomplish any of what I just said. I know they won't. I'm simply hoping they do for my own sake. Look at iOS and see how long it took them to get all that functionality.
I'm not the CEO of RIM for a reason. I'm on this forum sharing my ideas for a reason. I'm the #2 RIM fanboy (after Kevin that is).09-14-11 03:03 PMLike 0
