I don't have a data plan on my 7520 on the iden network. Does anyone know if there is a way to unlock the SMS so I can use it? Thanks.

I use a 7290 without a data plan and have no problems sending and receiving SMS messages.

What happens when you attempt to send a message?

Believe it or not, you cannot do text messages on the 7520. This model is perhaps the only Blackberry that does not support text messages. In general you don't need a data plan of any kind, Blackberry or regular smart phone, to use the phone feature or SMS/texting.

This is true... SMS is typically a different feature offered by operators and thus doesn't require a data plan.

    Be careful.
In the past when Nextel found a BB w/o a data plan they added it w/o telling you.

I bought one second hand, and I am finding this out the hard way. Isn't this one of the most basic cel phone functions? I downloaded a third party messaging software (3jam) but it doesnt seem to work either.

    Is the i7100 any better?

I still carry the i7100 (for work) it does MMS but no SMS. Keep in mind that when Nextel sees your sim card in a Blackberry they will add a data plan w/o telling you. At least they use to.

And I'll just add seeing as I'm on the same network (Telus) as the the poster - you don't need a data plan for text messaging.

I use a 3rd party app called LogicMail. You do need the basic 10 dollar plan however that give you I-net access.
To send an sms to someone use ex. E
    2515555555@teleflip.com .
This works on any carrier in North America.
Gotta stick to the cell phone companis.
    Lol

My problem is that I can get text messages but I can not reply. SMS isn't even a option in my pull down menu. I have a 7750. Any suggestions?

You can do sms on the 7100i. If we research will will find that the older BB were never meant to do mms or sms.
