i’ve attached a photo of what comes up on the lock screen, does it mean this phone is stolen? bought it from ebay for quite cheap. do i have to legally return it? i live in the UK so would be expensive to send to the canadian address shown.

Maybe it was a pre-release prototype of some sort meant for testng and limited RIM only use. Does it otherwise work fine enough for why you bought it? Presumably when you bought it you knew it was quite old and you weren't planning to use it as a live mobile phone/device, instead basically have it as only a collector piece? I suspect RIM (BlackBerry) doesn't even have an office at that address anymore. I doubt BlackBerry would put in effort to go after you to try to get it back.

It may be a review sample. BB will just throw it away if you return it.

I am pretty sure with BES you were able to put a generic if found message on the lock screens. This address is just down the street from me so it looks like this was most likely a RIM employees device at some point. There is no need to return it as at this point I don't assume they want it back. A lot of RIM employees had 10 of these in drawers for testing or trying out and just got put in junk drawers after time. Does the device still work or is it locked on thelat screen. If it's locked on that screen then someone from the BES server in the day locked the device until it would be returned to unlock it. Sadly there was no work around to a locked device because that was BES for you!

yea the phone still works, except for the scroller being dodgey, but that’s an unrelated issue. i bought it as a collectors item - definitely won’t be using that as my main phone lol. i searched up the address - they still have an office there, but thinking about it, they’ll just destroy it if i sent it back, so i’ll keep it around

i was thinking it may be some sort of developer or sample phone - i’m going to keep it around though, as it’ll just be disposed of and unused if it was sent back

BES is not enabled, which is weird - there’s also no password on the device, as it was reset before i got my hands on it. if i reset the device, the message goes away, however as soon as it’s connected to the computer and desktop software is opened, the message comes back, so it is still communicating with the servers i think. i’m not going to send it back, as after thinking about it, it won’t be much use to them

I doubt it's communicating with RIM/BlackBerry servers, given those are reportedly all shutdown. Maybe it tries and fails, and then goes down a path that results in that message being displayed.

Reloading the OS may remove the message and BIS connection.

Wouldn't you rather keep your phone than send it back to be destroyed?
