Next Windows OS is called 10 and they leave out No 9.

Where do you think they got the idea from? Any thoughts...

Well, they probably decided to avoid 9,so the next logical progression, of course, would be 10.

How does Windows 95 jump to 2000? Or 2000 to XP and then to 7?
Or even more confusing, HP's Slate 500 upgrade is the Slate 2.
Don't even get me started on the Nokia phone numbering system. Just accept that numbers don't mean what you think they mean.

He's talking about how microsoft is now doing what blackberry is trying to do skip bbos8,9 for 10 new platform... or windows 10 new threshold... it's interesting how they are extremely focused in enterprise and stuff. Talking about being more compatible with MDM and stuff... they are targeting a unified platforms Windows pc, tablet and phone for enterprise... all managed by windows.....

Internal numbers are a factor. Windows v9 is probably publicly named Windows 8.1.

This is Windows internal version 6.4, hence the "10". Windows 8.1 was 6.3, Windows 8 was 6.2, and Windows 7 was 6.1. At least that's how I understand it.

Windows 95 and 98 are often referred to as 9x generically, so calling the new OS "Windows 9" may cause some confusion. Of course, Windows 10 can read too much like Apple's OS X in my opinion. They probably should have gone back to using names instead of numbers.

BlackBerry was not trying to do that. They originally tried to use "BBX' as the name (a combination of BB and QNX) but were sued by someone who had the rights to those initials. They settled for "BB10" as a compromise - "X" means 10 in Roman numerals.

But they still ended up skipping the number nomenclature... because they created a new platform... windows seems to be doing the same because they want to differentiate what they have done in the past with what they are going to be offering.....so I can see why the originator of this thread thinks they are similar...

While you guys are arguing about numbers lol I just had an idea. Why doesn't BlackBerry partner up with Sony and they both do phones with BlackBerry 10 on it. Sony can run the PS5 or whatever off QNX aka BB10. Sony is in such a **** hole going BB10 wouldn't hurt really, they do offer great phones. BlackBerry could also partner up with them for components and also getting QNX on to the Playstation lol.

I think they likely felt that windows 8.1 was as close as they felt like getting to 9.

If anything, they should call it 7.5 - it's a hybrid of Win7 and 8.1. It does look cool, though - I'm thinking of putting it on my Asus tablet. I wonder if BlackBerry Blend will work on the beta version.

How does Windows 95 jump to 2000? Or 2000 to XP and then to 7?

    Carbon Fiber Z10 w/Leather Holster
Easy. Windows 95 was released in 1995. Windows 2000 was released when? 2000. MS also released Millennium edition that year. MS deviated away from the "release year" nomenclature with the release of ME, XP, and later Vista. MS eventually gave way to naming their OS by generation beginning with Windows 7, which was so named because it was, according to MS, their 7th OS. Never understood their reasoning though because at last count they had 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, and Vista which totals 8. But, that's MS for ya.
