It seems WhatsApp just cannot get it right - and it was already used for ID theft:

"A successful social engineering attack last week against domain name firm Network Solutions, used by WhatsApp, meant that the messaging app was one of a number of firms to suffer a DNS hijack attack in turn. Surfers attempting to visit its site were redirected to a pro-Palestinian propaganda website instead."

The bigger underlying issue is their weak crypto/method: WhatsApp mobile messaging app in the firing line again over cryptographic blunder | Naked Security

If BB's PR would do its job they would capitalize on it (without mentioning the app by name - see how Sony stole the Spring with its PS4 show by practically doing nothing just thriving on MSFT' incredibly incompetent, stupid decisions and communication.)
