BlackBerry doesn't have a chipset manufacturing arm so they typically use a SOC from Qualcomm or TI (STL-100). They are also 6-8 months later in bringing the same chipsets to market than competitors (Z10, Z30).

Under these trends BlackBerry's next generation chipsets are already on the market or will get here soon enough. It seems like Ontario and Windermere are rumored to run on the 8974AB chipset aka Snapdragon 801, which is Quad-core. Since chipset decisions have to be made atleast 8-12 months before launch, don't expect these to change anytime soon.

Qualcomm usually releases one flagship integrated chipset every year (8960, 8974) so they should have their next gen ready for late 2014. Based on the 8064 example (quadcore standalone chipset w/o modem) which preceded the Snapdragon 800 (8974) by a quarter, I would guess that Qualcomm's next gen chipset is a Snapdragon 805 (also quadcore) with an integrated LTE modem.

We should see this new QC chipset in BlackBerry's 2015 high-end lineup unless their device development strategy changes drastically. However the reality is that they are probably too lean to support anything other than Qualcomm right now so it looks like an Octa-core BlackBerry is a late 2015/2016 dream for now.

Jakarta will launch with 10.2.1.2947, I think. Sadly not 10.2.2.

Problem is, there aren't any non -Jakarta 10.2.1.2948 radios. Although, if you want to look at it:

I haven't finished looking at those files :P
    • New BBM 10.3.12.67 with ads and stickers
    • One more Ontario version (radio) going through certification
    • Appworld is ready for the new HD devices
    • Very minor changes here and there...

And some Jakarta pics, but it's not fun since we've already seen what it looks like...

From 800 to 801 is a very small change, so even though they started with the 800, chances are they'll deliver the final product on the 801.
The 805 has already been released and is used by products like the LG G3.
Qualcomm has a 8974 Pro in the pipeline, just like the S4 Pro. I think these offer a good compromise as you "only" need to upgrade the GPU drivers in order to drastically improve the performance of the device (Z30).
I'd love to see a high-end touch device from BB with the Adreno 420.
And I agree that their 61x (64bit) based product won't see the light of day until the 2nd half of 2015, 6 months after their competitors.

It think the first post is updated to show 801 on the O and W series, which is great.

The Snapdragon S4 Pro was the APQ 8064 which is comparable to the Snapdragon 805 which is APQ 8084. Both these are standalone apps processors without the integrated LTE modem, kinda like TI's OMAP 4 in the LTE PlayBooks. Qualcomm's next integrated APQ+Modem usually builds on their last standalone APQ so I'd imagine that it would be a beefed up 805 with an integrated modem. 64bit, but still quadcore. Though an octa-core using the big-little architecture from QC would be nice. They are only 2yrs behind Samsung in this...so far.

This appears to correspond with what we have about Mjolnir/Musket (although it looks like most of it came from the first post, anyway):

Strange...those are old processors in that Musket device. That is in the i9505 GS4 IIRC.

N4BB stated the following in one of their blog posts, http://n4bb.com/blackberry-planning-...-device-2015/:

Reaching out to a few sources, we?ve confirmed that BlackBerry has been planning to utilize the Snapdragon MSM8994.This chip uses the 20 nm HKMG process and uses an octa-core 64-bit architecture. Each core can reach a frequency of up to 2.5 GHz with4MB L2 cache.

Other features of the MSM8994 include:

    1600MHz 4GB RAM LPDDR3 PoP
    Adreno 430 500 MHz
    Pixel fill Rate 6Gpix / s
    Vertex 500Mtri / s
    OpenGL ES3.0, direct x11.1, OpenCL1.2
Obviously this is just speculation. We have no idea whether they're testing some monster device or not. Most likely not though.

However, if they did release an all-touch 5.3" with the above chipset and the speakers, antennae and battery life of the Z30 when they're claiming, it might just be the best hardware on the market.

    Mmm...CB10! Just the tip though...

Planning is nice... . Maybe they'll have a phone based on that chip in 2016... if they're still making high-end devices. The 8994 won't be sampling before 2015.

I've also asked my crystal ball and I read that HTC, Samsung and LG will be using the 8994, in 2015

Ah, I must get myself one of those.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if they release a device around the same time as the big Android boys with the same processor around the same time.

They have other options as they can use the Snapdragon 805, but I honestly don't care about a 64bit CPU in a device with 3GB RAM... The GPU is more important to me.

give me SGX543MP4+ on a current device, and I'll buy one. As in a current BlackBerry.

It's never going to happen. As someone has mentioned earlier, they're using exclusively Qualcomm chips in their phones.

Anyone saw the recent N4BB article? Apparently the build date of the recently leaked 10.3 was one day before Ontario was canned. And also they saying that they'll be no high end full touch but doesn't seemed to be based on inside sources but from Chen's recent interviews as well as what's been going on (e.g z10 right down etc).

Bummer. that is one very, very good GPU. I think that's the one in PS Vita.

I can't see them not releasing a new all-touch. Maybe not this year, but it could be the first half of the next year when most Z10 users contracts run out. Me thinks that the Z10 is the best sold BB10 device and most of these users won't return to a physical keyboard device. Then there are also those who moved to a Z30. They need an upgrade path. If there's no new all-touch, they'll most likely go search for it elsewhere, as BlackBerry themselves have already made them accustomed to a virtual keyboard. So no all-touch anymore doesn't really make sense.

BlackBerry will release a high-end touch. Things in business change quarter to quarter. Last quarter they were testing one and I don't believe it was cancelled just put on the back burner. If the Z3 sells well they will definitely have a high end touch. Then if corporations start upgrading to the Q20 and BES12 and Bbm starts to show signs of profitability it is easier for BlackBerry to do things such as try to compete in the high end touch market. I am surprised Blackberry even sold that many phones this quarter. I called every Verizon store within a 30 mile radius and they have no Blackberry's in stock. None! The Z30 is one of the top 3 phones of 2013 that most don't know about. So what is the point to come out with a high end touch if there is no marketing.

According to Niko from N4BB today his sources at BlackBerry told him the top of the line "Manitoba" all touch will be released in Q1 2015 calendar if at all. This is the phone with full hd and 64 bit processor and the project is led by the new exec from HTC(YES!!!!). As well the Ontario has been cancelled but might be revived by Foxconn for a new midrange phone but nothing is serious yet. Hopefully we get to see that Manitoba device.
