if it were as simple as you think it would be done already

no offence but you don't seem to understand the reason, purpose and limitations of computer code/languages. help us all out and take a class.
Neither it seems do you. The RIM server side protocols may already be implemented in C or C++. If not, they clearly could be. Any network protocol can be implemented in C and most already are.

The issue has nothing to do with programming languages. The problem is RIM's infrastructure is designed around the assumption that every user has one BB device.

Then tell me: how do you implement a java socket in C?

A "java socket" is merely a Java interface into a operating system socket. C programs on most operating systems (Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS, BB 10) can access the socket API directly since the native APIs for most operating systems are implemented as C libraries. Most operating systems kernals are written in C, even BB OS 7 has a lot of C code at its lower levels . The Java VM is also written in C.

They're obviously building the Death Star.
You do realize that the Death Star is destroyed in the end.

At the end of Return of the Jedi... but this is obviously a sequel.

Sounds like an R&D facility, how can you get a "large-scale" data center in a three story building? Especially if there are building for the next generation. If we take one of apple's data centers as providing something to compare with, the one they set-up in North Carolina (in 2009) is across 180 acres (I think).
The building is to support Communications Security Establishment of Canada surveillance and interception of all BlackBerry traffic.
