That's the point.... IF they are going another route, they don't need native developers so they don't need any one to support them.

If there is a Google deal in the works..... (big if). BlackBerry will either have full Android or a hybrid - but the hybrid will be for security and maybe a few basic apps, but 3rd party apps will all be Android.

Dev relations is not about goading people to develop for Native, it's about goading people to develop for BlackBerry platform, either with Native, WebWorks or Android Runtime.

Destroying the entire dev relations team will cut off any way to communicate with the developers.

Developer relations is not 25% of BlackBerry's workforce. Never was. I'd be surprised if it's even 75 people at this point.
I think you misunderstood what I was saying. 2000 people is 20% of the BlackBerry workforce. Included in that is the developer relations and if they are actually cutting the whole department that doesn't look good.

In other words, no more grassroots development.

I don't think the patents were the problem in a BlackBerry sale, but rather the hardware business.

Yes, I agree. I think that on their own the patents have value, but nobody wanted the whole company just for the patents. They are waiting to be able to get the patents on their own at a later time.

Yeah. If it came down to it, I doubt BlackBerry will have a hard time finding a buyer for their IP. Very different than the pitch of "Take on this handset business and compete against Apple and Samsung".

Yeah - should have directed my comment in general. Seems a few in the thread think dev relations is this massive team that plays solitaire all day. The reality is they're likely a small, underfunded, over-worked team with a near impossible task

Would you say their role is important within BlackBerry? Since apps is a major issue for BB10, I would think they are, but I don't know.

I think they need them, even if they are going to focus on enterprise. Just looking at my own phone (which I use for work in BYOD). At work, I use: BBM, WeChat, Lync (android version), WhatsApp, Contacts, Webex, GoToMeeting (Android Version), Concur Travel and Expenses (Android version - crap), DuoMobile, Box, BlackBerry Travel, Skype, AirCanada, LinkedIn ... just in the context of my job. Without a dev relations team looking at BlackBerry apps, I have a feeling many of those even wouldn't be available.

Hey look at that an app solution! Who woulda thunk? Now if they can justify 2000 layoffs on the back of this deal we should see some real movement tomorrow.

    Yup. Agreed.

Now it makes more sense that they released this news a day earlier than the earnings call where they may announce the 2000 cuts.

    Thunk isn't a word.

    Neither is woulda.

Let's to wait see what the stick does when they announce the layoffs.

Absolutely correct. The right way to say it is "Who'da thunk it?"

At this point, its an "If they announce layoffs". Absolutely rumours have come true. There have been others that have been total lunacy too.

Good point. If this is all just a rumor then it's moot.

If they fire the dev relations, who the $-:* would help people port their Android apps to Amazon?

There is no porting. They submit to the store like they have always been doing.
