So everyone who is proudly Canadian has to support BlackBerry?

Someone should tell that to all the Canadians that have adopted iOS and Android.

Yeah I would say so. Especially when they can just port their unmodified Android app for FREE and have BlackBerry repackage it for them. It's to their benefit to have their app available for ALL of their customers. We call it "customer service". We both would benefit from it.

I'm not talking about apps. I'm talking about handsets? Does every proud Canadian have to support BlackBerry by having a BB10 phone?

I didn't say they have to exclusively support BlackBerry, but inherent in "Proudly Canadian" is that they would at least offer an equal level of support to Canada's top tech company, even if it is struggling. Remember, this is not a large financial commitment.

They chose to paint "Proudly Canadian " on their planes and promote it, so they should stand behind that.

Of course not, but if you have a tattoo that says "Proudly Canadian " and you show it to every person you meet then I would say you should "walk the walk" and own a BlackBerry.

As I said earlier, Westjet created this expectation with their marketing, so don't just talk the talk, walk the walk and make a BlackBerry app.

They are proudly Canadian. I think it is crazy to say that not having a BlackBerry app means they aren't proudly Canadian. They employ Canadians and pump millions into the economy.

    By your logic:

Everyone who owns an iPhone isn't proudly Canadian.

Everyone who doesn't support the Montreal Canadians, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets, or Vancouver Canucks, isn't proudly Canadian.

Everyone who watches the NFL instead of the CFL isn't a proud Canadian.

Everyone who elects to travel outside Canada for a vacation isn't a proud Canadian.

    It starts getting silly.

So there is some link between being Canadian and supporting BlackBerry? That's so silly.

So anyone that I see overseas with a Canadian flag on their backpack should also be whipping out a BlackBerry? Silly.

This is the response I got when I contacted them and brought up the android port:

    Hi Daniel

    Thank you for your email.

I have engage the assistance or our Digital Initiatives & Web Business department to help us both understand the logic behind the decisions regarding Blackberry application you are requesting.

Less than 3% of WestJet’s mobile traffic comes from Blackberry devices, so we don’t believe developing an app for Blackberry is the best investment we can make. We are going to investigate porting over our Android app to see if this is viable to do and whether we can support it internally. As part of our mobile strategy, we’ll continuously evaluate which platforms our guests are using and adjust our support accordingly.

Looks like all is not lost, and we may potentially see this application in the future.

Thank you for your valued feedback, it is appreciated.

This is it exactly. If you claim proudly Canadian you should offer an 'equal ' level of support. Or at least some level of support.

It's similar to the shops that post a 'shop local' sign. That's great. I try to shop local. So it ticks me off if I go into one of those stores and can't find anything 'made in Canada'. They've opened themselves up by wanting you to support them for being Canadian. Ok. But it's a 2 way street.

Why should I fly Westjet? They are implying that I should because they are Canadian and I am Canadian.

Why should they offer an equal level of support for BlackBerry ? Because unlike IOS and Android, it's Canadian.

We're not asking for something extreme. We are asking for a similar level of support to what they already offer to the other 2 platforms. Just like they've asked us to support them even though they weren't the biggest airline - they were 'proudly Canadian ' and that should be a factor.

No. They see saying that they are a Canadian Company and that they are proud of that. They aren't telling you to fly with them for that reason at all.

So are you saying that everyone who doesn't have a BlackBerry app isn't Canadian? Or isn't proud to be Canadian?

What about all the people who have iPhones but go around saying that they are a proud Canadian with Maple Leafs and Canadian flags? How can they be proudly Canadian?

Why should they offer an equal level of support for BlackBerry ? Because unlike IOS and Android, it's Canadian.
How is BlackBerry anymore Canadian than Westjet? They hired an American VEO, who doesn't even live in Canada. By your logic they should have hired a Canadian because they are Canadian company, and there they aren't worthy to call themselves Canadian or proud or both.

It not an equal level at all. You are asking for a preferential level, because BlackBerry doesn't have an equal level of market share.

So for all the Canadian companies out there the only ones that can say they are proud are ones with BlackBerry apps?

What about foreign companies that have BlackBerry apps? Can they start calling themselves Canadian?

And most importantly are you OK with American companies only producing apps for iOS because it's American?

So let me explain. It has nothing to do with the app. It's purely principal. If you are going to be a flag waiver, and market yourself as "proudly Canadian" there should be certain expectations that come with that. Like as a Canadian, we will give you our business and in return you help out your brother Canadians. Sort of like you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.

It?s the whole chicken and egg scenario again with the whole app situation. So having said that, what's wrong with tossing BlackBerry a bone when they are down on their luck? A company who employees real Canadian families, who have to raise children, and put food on their tables?

Instead they go on public social media and tell BlackBerry users that they are insignificant

So by your logic - if android has 80%market share then that should be the only platform that people should develop for?

And yes - when they say they are proudly Canadian it's a pretty blatant plug for my Canadian dollars. They want support from Canadians. They want you to cheer the home team. That's fine. We just want the same back for our phone of choice. It doesn't matter where the CEO is from - BlackBerry is a Canadian company.

And please stop using hyperbole such as 'should IOS only produce for American companies'. Do you see any of us saying they shouldn't support IOS or android ? Where do we say you should only support the home country? Nowhere. We are saying also. They should also support BlackBerry.

Personally, when it's something like an airline, of which there are a limited number in Canada, I would like to see them support Windows phone too. Or at least make a great web app.

As for what people do on a personal level - again it's totally different. They're not telling me I should support them because they are proudly Canadian. They can be proudly Canadian and use whatever phone they want as long as they don't expect me to buy anything from them.

Westjet on the other hand wants something. They want Canadian customers.

How about all we give them business offer good service at a reasonable price? Or the fact that instead of outsourcing as much as they can they've kept jobs in Canada.

It?s the whole chicken and egg scenario again with the whole app situation. So having said that, what's wrong with tossing BlackBerry a bone when they are down on their luck? A company who employees real Canadian families, who have to raise children, and put food on their tables?
There's nothing wrong with asking for it. It is, however, supremely arrogant to expect it and to say that any one who doesn't have an app on BlackBerry isn't a proud Canadian.

What about all of the Canadian families that Westjet employs, who also have children and need to put food on the tables? Doesn't giving them a good job to let them do that count for anything in determining if they are a proud Canadian company or is it only having a BlackBerry app?

Instead they go on public social media and tell BlackBerry users that they are insignificant
But we are insignificant! What percentage of the market do we have?

If I start a phone company tomorrow and only sell three phones should Westjet be forced to make an app for my phone lest they be called not truly proudly Canadian?

More then 3 out of 100! I don't know the exact percentage, but that number is likely a US statistic. I have almost a 100 bbm contacts since bbm went cross platform, but almost 1/3rd are BlackBerry users still. It's easy to tell because they show with a bbm video chat option.
