So I wonder what to make of the fact that the new CEO plans on staying in California and maintaining his other positions. This at least according to one news report.

Sounds like he doesn't plan on having a long term as CEO and the search for a more permanent executive solution is under way. I wonder then how much leeway that new CEO will have in terms of setting the strategic direction for BlackBerry.

Interesting optics for employees and the public alike.

What BlackBerry says that they are planning to do... and what PW and the new Board are really planning are not the same things.

I think it would do the company some good to get some thinking from outside of the Waterloo distortion field.

This confirms he will act more as a placeholder figure head until the entire management team is restructured.

Heins became invisible the past few months. Not hard to replace that.

So does this make it more or less likely that John will see the statue they are building for him in Waterloo?

Some of you people really must be lazy of you can't be bothered to read the official BlackBerry press release. I'll help you out. It says.

"Upon the closing of the transaction, John S. Chen will be appointed Executive Chair of BlackBerry's Board of Directors and, in that role, will be responsible for the strategic direction, strategic relationships and organizational goals of BlackBerry. " and "In addition, Mr. Heins will step down as Chief Executive Officer at closing and Mr. Chen will serve as Interim Chief Executive Officer pending completion of a search for a new Chief Executive Officer."

Here's a hint for you. Think Google's Eric E. Schmidt.

There will be a new BlackBerry CEO, who's responsibilities will be different from Chen's.

This news shows that Watsa and company are very f*ing serious about turning this company around.

Not an issue I think. He can use BBM Video. . Anyways, better he be out there in Silicon Valley where the potential opportunities, competition and talent is to change BB. He can get better feelers for a buyer/partner(s) in a face-to-face stealth way than being in isolated Waterloo. Show up in person when needed like company townhalls and such.
