From what I remember this F1 Deal was signed by the previous management team under Thorsten Heins. If I recall correctly it was a 3 year deal for a dollar value in the $40 mil a year range.

I also recall seeing somewhere that Blackberry doesn't plan to renew the sponsorship since the money could go to better use according to them.

We will see what happens I guess

The contract was set to expire last year, and, yes, obviously the price would have gone way up. But also, the justification for spending the money wasn't really there anymore.

Blackberry should go to Ferrari in 2016 if any team at all. I think they have a winner this year. Pull rod suspension never worked well with Pirelli tyres

BlackBerry is best suited for Maclaren Honda.

Based on the teams last year performance. A lot of similarities.

Totally not surprising but sad to see. Lewis gave the brand some winning swagger around the globe.

I am not surprised by this at all. Thorsten Heins' management signed the contract when BB10 was brand new and many people thought it could gain momentum and become "the third force" - that didn't turn out well at all.
With all the cost cuttings, money saving and of course the lay-offs we saw in the recent past, I think it is pretty hard to justify a high number of double-digit millions for a marketing contract. As others already stated, it is quite likely you have to pay much more now for such a contract with Mercedes than you had three years ago.

As far as I can remember, 2 of the 3 years were world championship years. They couldn't of asked for better results or exposure. Any exposure is good and winning is better. Leaving now doesn't really hurt them b/c they're leaving at the top, which alot of brands prefer to do. Too much doe for them to be putting out at the moment, although the affiliation to the automotive industry would be a good argument to keep them there but the money must be hard to justify.

One of the other threads mentioned how the team was using all sorts of BlackBerry technology for secure communications or whatever which may be true but that's thousands of dollars worth of technology while sponsorship costs millions per year and you've got to pay to play.
