NSA infiltrates links to Yahoo, Google data centers worldwide, Snowden documents say - The Washington Post

Even after NSA revelations, Yahoo won’t say if it plans to encrypt data center traffic

Basically, the NSA has been spying on network traffic between datacenters. The NSA says their focus has been on foreign traffic, meaning Americans have a less likelihood of having their traffic spied on, documented, and stored somewhere in Maryland. It appears they had the help of the British in accomplishing this. Google's solution is to encrypt all data stored and transmitted between their datacenters. This doesn't stop the NSA, but it makes it significantly more difficult, therefore making it more likely they'll do the spying under PRISM guidelines.

Basically, all that means if you're using cloud services, email services, chat, photo and video sharing of any sort, and you're afraid of the NSA spying on you, your best bet at the moment is to go with Google.

I read something about the crypto that android implemented thru java was actually weaker in later OS versions vs the earlier ones.

Here: Why Android SSL was downgraded from AES256-SHA to RC4-MD5 in late 2010

So why would the NSA work hard when they didnt need too.
