How a company that produces no products and has made zero profits to date with its business model was able to raise over 30 billion in its IPO (yes I'm talking about you Twitter! ) yet BlackBerry can't seem to raise a red cent to save it's a..?

I believe twitter, like a lot of social media, has a advertisement section where you're able to advertise whatever but with a fee.

BlackBerry will be able to compete with twitter using bbm channels. But right now bbm makes $0 while twitter does produce revenue and is more popular

I don't have a source for you but on the business news this morning they said Twitter was projected to be profitable in a year or two.

Dependant on if Twitter can turn targeted ads into a big business something it has been trying to do for SEVEN YEARS.

    Nice catch...

That's the thing about stocks, you are really investing in future potential, by the time the numbers tell you what is going to happen the price has already been adjusted, that's why it is a gamble. What I love is the 1-2 year projections for profitability and what the world will come up with in those intervening years. Personnaly I wouldn't touch social media, it's too volatile and can die overnight, look at MySpace, years ago it was big, now it's barely on the radar. Not to mention the fact that there are umpteen billion social networks out there, it seems like every new idea, no matter what it is calls itself a social network. It's like how everyone and their dog (litterally) had a blog.

Obviously the street sees the potential in Twitter's profitability. It's just like giving a valuation to BBM.

What potential? Seven years and no profit last quarter 70 million dollar loss? The "street" only sees an opportunity to artificially raise the stock price so it can find suckers to sell to in the aftermarket.

Technology of the future vs technology of the past.

Financially speaking, it's clear that Twitter's best days are ahead of them. Financially speaking, it's obvious that Blackberry's best days are in the past.

Ok, a couple of things wrong. They didn't raise $30B in its IPO. They raised. $2.1B. Due to its 70%+ jump in price after the IPO, Twitter's market cap is about $24B. Historically, there has never been a $30B IPO. Not even close.

Bbm is probably vastly undervalued right now. Roughly 100 million users. I believe twitter is around 350 mill? Not quit sure, but at the rate bbm is growing it should reflect in the stock price at some point, but the stock market is rarely rational lol

Apparently Twitter management is able to "sell" the value of their service to investors whereas BlackBerry management cannot convince people and organizations of the value of secure mobile communications, particularly in the case of organizations which can completely lock-down Apple, BlackBerry, and Google smartphones and presumably tablets. Having the best products and services means nothing unless you can sell.

Revenue and profit are not necessarily the same thing on the balance sheet. Many companies have annual revenue exceeding 1 billion dollars yet only make a profit of 325 million dollars. I recommend you take an accounting course.

Twitter's revenue for 2012 was about $350M. They're forecasting about $600 for 2013 and $1B+ for 2014. That's called "producing revenue." The reason for the optimistic valuation is that their revenues are actually far ahead of Facebook in the same time frame since inception.
