I'm pretty sure the endgame is less the nodes at each end but rather being the medium that connects all of them.

The way to leverage their NOC is to start adding things onto it to create a reliance. Bbm money, secure payments (cibc/rogers, Tim Hortons), auto manufacturer OTA updates, etc.

Of course also running those nodes will certainly help that cause.

one small step for QNX (in terms of what else it can do), one giant leap for BB- positive growth and just any positive news out of one of it's "big 4" core competencies...

Chen should say something about this as well.. make it known, and a little more clearly than these headlines have.

Embedded systems is not a big a deal as Crackberry makes it out to be. Aside from the marginal profits, these type of OS changes happens all the time. I doubt Microsoft blinked.
They do not happen all the time as it is extremely expensive to change OSes. Short term expensive. If they happened all the time as you say said companies would be broke, or at least not profitable in whatever division the OS was a part of.

So would existing vehicles be able to be upgraded to QNX? Or is the hardware that works with Windows incompatible with QNX?

I believe the whole premise of the article is that Sync is currently Microsoft OS and for future vehicles it will now be QNX instead.

    The title is tricky.
Ford already uses sync, that will be replaced with QNX in their future products.
Therefore it sucks for Microsoft and not for BlackBerry.

I actually can't get over how terrible that joke is...so I thought I would share it with everyone on here.

Also, that's really awesome news. I just want it in new Kia's...their designs and 7 year warranties are rather nice.

Well. I was going to buy a 2014 fusion but if this is true I may have to wait. Ford sync is a nice idea but MSFT can't make it work right to save it's life. Can't wait to see how this goes.

That's an interesting question and the first one that came to mind for me. Sync has been around a while -- which means it likely is based on Windows CE at it's core (?? anyone). Which means ARM is probably in the Ford hardware. Which means it could theoretically run QNX. Though working on old tech is always fraught with issues. Perhaps Ford's main focus would be to get this tech into new models ASAP so as to avoid more bad customer sentiment -- leading to more bad ratings in upcoming surveys. Anyway, hopefully this is something that we'll see sooner rather than later.

Yay Ford! Now the question becomes should I get a newer Focus (currently driving an '07) or get an Escape like I've always wanted? It's neat to think that my next vehicle will have QNX.
