Very smart play indeed. I'm biased in this situation given my interest in BlackBerry, but could such a request also be exploited by companies and/or reported by the media as a bailout of sorts?

I'd say anything positive can be spun to the negative.
Example, Canadian government stops Levona bid, invest 1 Billion instead.
Sounds just like Watsa bid crumbles, invest 1 billion instead. The media are they really telling you the truth?

They need cash now..more from confidence standpoint than requirement.

Very smart and not surprising...again, the media spins this, but it's a good play. We are talking cash positive solutions while they restructure and burning cash.

So if this comes true, does this mean they'll have an injection of 2 billion (1B from Prem and 1B from tax)

As a bailout no, but you can bet that every analyst will go to extraordinary lengths to make the point that BBRY's cash balance is made up of a large portion that is NOT from anything revenue generating (sales of devices, service fees, etc...)

I don't think they get the full billion from what the article says, at least not all at once.

    But, I could be wrong.

    You're not.
is seeking a tax refund of as much as $1 billion
They may get the full amount. They may get less. The accelerated refund could be denied. At this point no one can say.

Why does it have to be accelerated? What's the advantage receiving the cash this year as opposed to next year?

(Better) confidence in the company from the market and public, I'm assuming.

Hope this works out. IMO, the Canadian government has no reason not to do this now that the ship has been controlled by a new captain and co-captain. Regardless, they have essentially $3bil in cash now, so whether this comes now or later it will be nice.

Longer runway. People are forgetting that they still have $3B in purchase commitments alone due to suppliers in the next 12 months.

From what it sounds like, this is either a refund of overpayment on taxes, a delayed payment of taxes to boost the company, or a combination of the two. So as long as the company doesn't go belly-up, our hard-earned tax dollars are safe.
