    Interesting report... cautiously optimistic.

    Nokia has that market to lose, and I don't think Windows Phone is going to cut it for them. I am curious how many of those BlackBerry sales are for BB10 phones, though.

    as we know BB doesn't reveal numbers. The Z30 is well priced in South Africa and receiving good reviews. Now lets hope that the market stops listening to the "media" and actually looks at the BlackBerry 10 devices for what they are - great units, with superb battery life and a workhorse of note.

    Gadget Web Site - Mobile Consumer in SA: Now a data economy

    and the key info

    The survey, conducted among adult cellphone users living in cities and towns in South Africa, reveals that Nokia remains the most popular phone brand in the country, but its market share has dropped significantly, from 50% to 44%. Blackberry has increased its market share locally, despite almost vanishing as a force in Western markets, from 18% to 23%, thanks to its continued aspirational appeal in younger markets.

    Samsung has increased share marginally, from 18% to 19%. In mid-2012, consumers had indicated they would move away from the brand, with a third of its users saying they would opt for other phones. However, the appeal of its Galaxy range of Android devices across all smartphone price segments has resulted in a resurgence for Samsung.
    Good to see if its true. Dont know how accurate the survey is but it appears that only adults 19-24 were used and it was also backed by a bank interested in mobile banking use.

    Survey was run by World Wide Worx - a highly respected research company and backed by the most innovative bank in South Africa which virtually pioneered mobile banking.

    Not quite Matt. The 19-24 mention was related to their greater reliance on data as opposed to voice when compared to other age groups. I don't think it was meant to reflect that they were the only group surveyed.

    ...reveals that the 19-24 age group representing students and entrants into the workforce is abandoning voice faster than any other segment. Only 56% of this groups mobile budget is now spent on voice, down from 66% in mid-2012. Data spend, on the other hand, has increased from 17% to 24%.

    {something, something, something}

    Older users continue to spend far more overall, but the powerful shift in spend from voice to data will work its way up the age segments in the coming years, says Arthur Goldstuck, managing director of World Wide Worx. Already, we are seeing a flattening out of the curve of data use from the 25-34 through to the 46-55 age groups. Only above that age does data spend drop off but not very significantly.
