Looks like BlackBerry was still hard at work with their patents, despite the not so good year they had in 2013. Jumped from the 29th position to the 20th with 1334 approvals. Maybe we could be seeing some great stuff coming from these in the near future!

That's great. Also, we have seen in couple of videos where John Chen has stressed on patenting. He doesn't mind in getting involved in patent war and earn some big money.. and there's no harm in it.. This also helps the company to stay in media's limelight!

Sadly, if you want to make it in the gadget business, you're going to need patents and you're going to need lawyers to protect them.

    Blackberry is... intellectual property horsepower.

To bad patents aren't worth what they were a few years ago. Patents was the main reason I couldn't believe that some other big player on that same list didn't jump in an scoop BlackBerry up.

While I'm happy to see evidense that Blackberry is still alive and kicking, this patent filing for the most granular ideas is getting out of control. Just look at the Monsanto example were they patented corn seed by inserting fish DNA to be used as a marker. Then they turned around and sued any farmer that had any of this corn in their fields.

At what point in time is some company going to patent air and then charge us for breathing. (Apple would be first in line for that one !!)

New US patents will be worth more than old patents. Before, patents were only tested when challenged, now they can be challenged prior to approval, which makes them stronger and more valuable.

@EchoTango: Monsanto would patent air and charge us to breath it, Apple would charge us for the app to control the breathing apparatus.

And Blackberry would wait two years before doing anything about it slowly choking all the while.

Pretty impressive on blackberry's part. The article even pointed out the company's strong showing.

I think they had a lot of offers for the patents but wanted to split up or shutter the other parts. Apple showed interest in BlackBerry patent buy, board refused offer

Is there a list of patents and pending patents that Blackberry have sent in the last year or so? I can't find crap on it.
