    How can this be possible?

Here is the whole article, so you don't have to click it. (It has a picture of the patent.. Looks just like BBM!)

iPhone 6 update: Apple patents BlackBerry BBM-like instant messaging app

Yesterday, on March 26, 2013, Apple was granted a patent for its invention relating to portable electronic devices, and more particularly, to portable devices for performing instant messaging.

According to the US Patent and Trademark Office, the instant messaging patent is for a portable electronic device with a touch screen display [which] displays a list of instant messaging conversations including a group conversation.

If it sounds incredibly close to BlackBerrys BBM service, thats because it is, or so we think.

Were sure almost everyone reading this article knows what BBM offers a way to send and receive messages within a group in real time. For the record, BBM is an Internet-based instant messenger application that allows messaging between BlackBerry users. Messages sent via BBM are sent over the Internet and use the BlackBerry PIN system, so communication is only possible between BlackBerry devices.

And with the latest upgrade, BlackBerry now offers BBM Voice, or the ability to make free voice calls to your BlackBerry contacts over the WiFi network.

Apples new patent for instant messaging offers the same utility for text not voice, at least not yet over a radio frequency.

The group conversation includes a first multi-recipient identifier and a group conversation indicia. In response to detecting a user selection of the group conversation, the device displays a set of outgoing messages from a user of the device to multiple recipients in a chronological order and a second multi-recipient identifier, the Apple patent with USPTO states.

The device receives a new outgoing message for the group conversation entered by the user of the device through the touchscreen display, and responds to detecting a user request to send the new outgoing message to the multiple recipients by sending the new outgoing message to the multiple recipients in the group conversation. The new outgoing message is appended to the set of outgoing messages displayed on the touchscreen display, it adds.

The patent is specifically for a portable communications device such as a mobile telephone that also contains other functions, such as PDA and/or music player functions, a.k.a an iPhone. The patent elaborates the RF (radio frequency) circuitry which receives and sends RF signals, also called electromagnetic signals.

It thus describes the process of sending and receiving instant messaging via radio frequency: The RF circuitry converts electrical signals to/from electromagnetic signals and communicates with communications networks and other communications devices via the electromagnetic signals.

Some of the other recent patents that Apple Inc. has secured include those for the anti-crash mechanism, ak.a. parachute, and the ultimate touchscreen on which well be able to scribble notes with an ordinary pen or even pencil.

Yesterday, Emirates 24|7 reported about Apples latest acquisition, of indoor GPS firm WiFiSLAM, which has the technology to allow smartphones to pinpoint their location in real-time to 2.5m accuracy using only ambient WiFi signals that are already present in buildings.

This is the latest in a long list of iPhone 6 leaks, including the acquisitions and patents that Apple has recently bagged and, hopefully, at least some of these will be implemented in the upcoming iPhone 6.

But it certainly isnt the last of such rumours to surface well surely be bringing you more iPhone 6 rumours as they materialise.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. It's clear that others are trying to make their IM clients more robust and 'BBM-like'. BlackBerry cannot afford to stand still with BBM. They need to innovate - more so than they've done in the past few years. Other clients have almost achieved parity. If Blackberry stand still BBM will be surpassed.

Whoa, does Apple guys sure know how to Innovate! :-) They should glue a keyboard on the Iphone`s as well and patent it as their Iberry!

BlackBerry most definitely has a patent on BBM, they would be idiotic if they didn't.
(Also, remember how they are suing [still] Kik messenger for "patent infringements")

Seriously all governments/etc need to totally revamp Patent Laws in regards to technology because people like Apple (who just try to patent everything), patent trolls, etc are just going to continue this non-sense until they stop allowing them to patent stuff that they didn't even invent or stuff that is needed for all phones to operate. Apple got crushed back in the day with patent suits and ever since then they have had full time patent lawyers on staff and literally patent everything that pops into their head even if they are going to ever use it. I know companies deserve to have their inventions protected, but it is just getting out of hand with what they are allowing to go through. This patent submission, she go under the file "already invented" and sent back to Apple.

I guess my biggest problem with this is that the media take-away will be something along the lines of, "Apple continues to make our wildest dreams come true with this spectacular innovation...."

Makes you wonder if BBM was cross-platform as everyone is trying to me more BBM like only because it isn't cross-platform. Think how cool BBM would be if you could contact anybody on any phone. Not only would it likely kill or reduce a lot of third party offerings, even Apple or Android offerings would be small players.

how does something like this get patented?

so .....in other words SMS texting? ....or am I missing something?

Pretty sure, based on how I read the report, that this patent doesn't relate to BBM and is "different" as Apples patent is for a messenger that transmits over "Radio Frequency" BBM is transmitted over the Internet or BlackBerry's own NOC, these are 2 completely different things, I know they sound the same, but as far as the patent goes, it's different. I could patent a messeging system that sends messages through entangled photons(Quantum messaging) and it would be different them both this patent and BBM.

The difference that we know and anyone with half a brain knows, is that Radio transmissions can be easily intercepted.

The keywords being "with a touch screen display." RIM/BBRY certainly holds plenty of patents, but how many are for devices with a touchscreen display? Certainly there are multiple patents by BBRY on BBM, but whether they apply specifically to touchscreen devices is the ultimate question.

Maybe they're just trying to distract BB? They can certainly afford to fight BlackBerry in court for years even if they don't care if they win.

While I do agree that is a distinction, I doubt I can go around grabbing Apple patents and amending a note stating "on a red wireless device" while technically it is different, I doubt I would win a battle in court if Apple even made a red iPhone.

Everyone is ahead of themselves... there is a "HUGE" difference between filing and being granted a patent as opposed to developing a product... patents by nature protect you product from the time you were granted it... so if BBM came out before the patent was granted... there is no case as BB could prove the technology and code existed before the patent... had they launched BBM after it would a whole other issue... Patents are filed everyday and the vast majority are just sit there are never developed.;... remember a patent is not a product.... only a protection for an idea....

Radio transmissions can just as easily be encrypted. You might need more than half of your brain to realize that though.
