Apple developing car operating system in Canada, sources say - The Globe and Mail

Many of the engineers working in Canada were hired over the past year and about two dozen came from BlackBerry Ltd.s QNX, a leading automotive software provider, the people said. They asked not to be identified discussing details of a secret project.

Most non competes that you see today just require forfeiture of some unvested earnings. Apple could very easily just match anything that QNX employees might forfeit if they moved to Apple.

It was only a matter of time. The automotive industry is big bucks and Apple has the money to take on BlackBerry in this arena. Globe and Mail article was a good read. The recent outage of the Internet (not to mention the hacks of some vehicles) will have auto makers looking closely at securing their systems. Time to start amping up sales team at BlackBerry to secure more of the automobile sector. Right now 60 million vehicles running QNX: a drop in the bucket. Pick up the pace BlackBerry.

For all we know, Dan Dodge might have had a very short non compete agreement.

Contrary to popular belief, non competes can be helpful and enforced. Currently Rogers in Canada is awaiting their new CEO's non compete to finish from Telus.

When Dan Dodge said he was retiring, he may have had a desire to and didn't have an iron clad non compete or non at all.

The biggest issue is the draining of quality talent from BlackBerry and hopefully in some aspects they are ahead of the game in developing IOT and automobile software that can be of significant monetary in the near future. Best of luck

The former president of Telus still cannot take a job he has already been hired for at Rogers.

Last I saw QNX was not developing self driving car software. Anyway, non competes are very hard to enforce these days.

The difference here is that they are in the exact same industry and he has intimate knowledge of their finances and strategic planning.

It certainly not good news to see BlackBerry talent go to Apple, especially the people from QNX. This was one of BlackBerry's growth areas. Even if David Dodge wanted to truly retire they should have retained him as a consultant or Board Director etc. so he stays in the loop.

They don't hold water much anymore and in a lot cases those people may have been let go.

One wonders if the future when buying your vehicle will be the ability to select your auto UI like you select your paint scheme. If you're IOS, dealer loads it onto your new auto and Apple gets a cut plus any subscriptions on it.

Most cars will support Car Play and Android Auto, so it won't matter what phone they have; it will work*.

*Obviously this isn't true for the tiny niche players, but that's part of what you give up when you buy non-mainstream products.

I mean a UI that doesn't rely on connection with your phone. You'll have standard (maybe room for QNX Car), IOS and Android(Andromeda or whatever will be 2-3 years from now). I doubt all will be free as both auto makers and UI makers will interested in extracting as much revenue from this source. The phone solutions will always be there just not as convenient and maybe not as feature rich.
