Apple Inc CarPlay brings iPhone features to GM, BMW, Ford and other car dashboards | Financial Post

Apple’s in-car technology could prove to be a positive move for BlackBerry Ltd., as software developed by the Waterloo, Ont.-based company’s subsidiary QNX Software Systems will support CarPlay technology.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since there is a some people confused by the OP's post, I am editing it with relevant content from the article. CarPlay makes Apple sound great and like they're installing iOS in every car but that's simply not the case. CarPlay realistically, is doing nothing but mirroring your iOS device content onto a display. It still needs an underlying system in order to fully operate, something such as QNX or similar. Apple and QNX are and have been partners for a while now and in some vehicles, QNX or parts of QNX, such as MirrorLink will be used to actually power CarPlay. - Bla1ze

tl;dr: Without QNX, parts of QNX or a system like QNX - There is no CarPlay

QNX is the market leader in operating system platforms for automotive infotainment systems, with a market share above 50%, according to data from market research firm IHS Automotive, and the company counts Apple among its clients.

“Connectivity to smartphones and other mobile devices is a key strength of QNX Software Systems’ platform for car infotainment systems, and many automakers and tier one automotive suppliers use our platform to implement smartphone/head-unit integration in their vehicles,” said Paul Leroux, a spokesman for QNX Software Systems.

“We have a long-standing partnership with Apple to ensure high-quality connectivity with their devices, and this partnership extends to support for Apple CarPlay.”

QNX provides its operating system platform technology to many of the world’s largest auto makers, including those working with Apple on CarPlay, such as Ford, BMW, Honda, General Motors, and Toyota.

Apple just knows how to do it in style.

"The Best iPhone experience on four wheels."

Apple - CarPlay (Apple's coming soon holding page)

^ This one page does more than all of QNX's silly regurgitated demos at each event with the Bentley, of which, Blackberry is very well hidden under the rug.

You do realize that this is AirPlay for the car. CarPlay still requires an embedded real-time OS like QNX in order to run.

The CarPlay system would seem to be QNX CAR 2′s soon-to-be biggest rival in the infotainment system industry. Interestingly, the CarPlay system may actually run on top of QNX. You might have been aware that the QNX website lists Apple as a QNX strategic partner in automotive.

Yes, you read that correctly. Apple is a strategic partner for QNX in automotive. Could Apple be utilizing the power of QNX to operate the CarPlay infotainment system? We’ve reached out to BlackBerry and QNX to determine if CarPlay is using QNX and will update this post accordingly.

Airplay also requires a Power adaptor, a plug socket, and most importantly an electricity providor.

Thing is, the underlying electricity power company make a heck of a profit, whereas the underlying QNX company... was bought out for $200 million, has yet to demonstrate how it will bring any cash in for Blackberry.

The 3mm head phone jack became "iPod / iPhone connector" even though these devices came out later.

People won't ask does the car come with QNX, they will ask, does it support Carplay.

Just the same way (a lot of consumers through power of brand perception and marketing) people think all tablets are iPads.

"Is that the Blackberry iPad or Samsung iPad?

Yeah. This is a loss. This was BlackBerry's vision as well, but Apple actually delivered. BlackBerry did not.

    Precisely.

(If it is powered by QNX)
Apple let QNX do all the hard work, put their own iOS layer on top of it, packaged it beautifully, and WILL take full credit for it.

People won't see QNX/BB, they will see the Apple logo. More weight for the Apple brand perception. Apple is in the driving seat whilst Blackberry is stuck in the Trunk, even with many years head start in this industry through QNX.

"Apple said that CarPlay will be available as an update to iOS 7 and will work with smartphones that support Apple’s Lightning connectors, namely the iPhone 5s, 5c and iPhone 5."

QNX has been able to do all of this wirelessly for quite a while

It's not known how much revenue a company that cost $200 million to buy outright actually brings in for Blackberry.

Meanwhile, iOS is branching into other systems = mobile computing / the internet of things.

If the trend becomes CarPlay as the front-end layer, expect MORE vehicle specific apps for iOS carplay.

    Not a loss? OK buddy.

That's like saying, if the iPhone ran QNX, no loss... more revenue for Blackberry, but iOS is the layer on top and thats where the cash cow is at, in the over layered OS and the app eco-system.

And now? You got the result!
Better- say nothing and do your thing! Then come on stage and say- HERE IS OUR SOLLUTION!
And not- "this is our sollution-(apple, google...you have time to copy it) coming soon this summer(maybe summer, or maybe winter...or we cancel it before release)"

Well... in all fairness... Apple - CarPlay page also says coming soon, but i THINK that's more to do with IF they ARE using QNX, then they know too well they can't rely on Blackberrys track record of deadlines so have allowed some room to manoeuvre around the companies incompetencies lol

I dont see volkswagen, porsche, audi and mercedes in that list.

Those 4 are very very important global automotive companies. I really really hope QNX gets them.

The big ones lost to apple are definitely BMW, ford, honda, hyundai, kia and toyota.

    There is still hope yet!

    BlackBerry/QNX has to impress NOW!

All manufacturers will require iOS compatibility but may not require BBOS compatibility. QNX HAS TO BE compatible with iOS or it is a non-starter. QNX may end up being the back end but will have to work with iOS for infotainment purposes.

Do you really think Ford or any other car maker will allow or use a system that is not compatible with iOS?

BBOS may run better on the QNX back end, but as usual, Apple has too much market share to ignore. All people will want to know is if their iPhone will work and it will. QNX will get single digit profits while Apple gets double digits on this feature.

QNX is not a really a huge money maker and can't support BBRY in and of itself. Yes it helps, but Apple just swooped in a took a bigger and better piece of the pie.

How does QNX being acquired for 200 million mean anything? If CarPlay can't run without QNX, I'd say BlackBerry commands the chips. iOS branching into other systems? That's a bit generic considering how they refuse to go cross-platform for anything and run a closed system that operate on proprietary components...
iOS runs on top of QNX. QNX is not viable without iOS compatibility. QNX may be critical, but without iOS compatibility, not a single car maker would use QNX. QNX and Apple are partners here, they need each other. QNX will not and can not throw Apple overboard to benefit BB devices.

It means the revenue it brings in for Blackberry is irrelevant.

There are other alternatives to QNX, but theres NO value in it for Apple to control that aspect of the embedded OS. Like you said, they refuse to go cross platform, they like to control every aspect of anything & everything.

The value is in the over layered OS
= iOS (carplay to run on top of QNX)
= BB10 (runs on top of QNX)

Get this whole QNX idea of your head lol it's good, but not relevant to the extent you guys have made out.

You don't get the economics of it all. QNX does all the hard work for a few bucks, Apple gets all the glory and bigger $$$. Unfortunately too familiar a story, but true. Every dollar Apple gets, BBRY loses.

Android has 80 percent of the global smartphone market though. So I dont understand this compatibility argument.

And knowing apple everything is proprietary.

More fallout from the for sale sign. While BlackBerry was looking for buyers and bumbling the BB10 rollout, Apple was working on this in the background, investing money and developing relationships with auto manufacturers. QNX seems to have infected with the BlackBerry corporate culture of "they will buy it because we make it and they are our customer". Hopefully QNX will get something from this, but I bet Apple branding will be all over the devices and they will be making more per device.

You aren't understanding how this works. Apple runs on Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and many other networks just like it will run on QNX. Can you imagine Verizon saying iOS won't run on our network? QNX is in the same pickle. They have to support iOS and Android.

QNX is not really proprietary or it wouldn't exist. In fact, it is a partner with Apple in this area. It has to be as explained above.

The "global" 80% is bloated where Android & Nokia is doing really well with the mega low-cost entry level devices in the developing countries.

Hardly the target audience for brand new 2014 cars.
