I've just activated my 7250 (wanted to try an inexpensive model before shelling out big dough on a new one) and have encountered an issue that I can't seem to get resolved.

Do any other Blackberry users on Verizon Wireless in the USA have an idea as to how Yahoo IM's are charged using the Unlimited Email And Internet packaged from Verizon?

I have friends who swear that IMs sent through their BlackBerry's are essentially free since they are considered data, however VZW remains quite convinced that they count towards your text allowance (depending on your text plan) as "out-of-network" texts.

    Any thoughts on this?

I think I saw another post on this topic recently here on CrackBerry forums. My memory is that if you use the application provided by RIM, it will be charged as data. If you use another app, it could be charged as SMS and thus message text.

So try here and I think you will be okay (free data). I am on the $30/month unlimited data plan from Verizon.

This link on the Blackberry site has all the IM applications (Yahoo, Google, AIM, ICQ, and Windows). Let us know if this works for you.

On my carrier, Rogers, Yahoo is data.

    Unlimited Email And Internet ...
That implies you have BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).

Are you able to use BlackBerry PIN messaging? If so, you have the correct support for data.

If you download the Yahoo/AIM/MS Live/ICQ apps from RIM they all use data not SMS/Text Messages

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I think I am running an older OS as anytime I try to download an app (other than a icon for the main screen), I get the following error:
error: invalid manifest or application descriptor

So, I'm going to do a little more research and see how to fix this, if it's possible.

    Thanks again!
