    Super Newbie questions here...

I see a number of apps for IM, etc (Jive, IM+, etc.)
but I am unclear what they give me that my stock ATT Curve
    does not.

I have unlimited data; does that include texting? Is there
a program I can download that would give me unlimited texting
    at a better price?

    Is texting different then SMS?

Where can I go to read the basics on all of this?

    Thanks tons!

As for the IM applications, I would say go with JiveTalk. I have 3 days left of my free trial. you can the app for $15 dollars for your berry, but for 30, you get your own code. So if when you get a new blackberry in the future, you just download the application and enter your code.

Ok. Texting is the same sms.

You can go to Blackberry's 101 section, and go to the how-to section in the forums. Also if you have some free time, you can also search the forums. I hope that I have answered your question correctly.

Being with ATT, are SMS, text and IM's all billed the same.
In other words, are they all 'data'?

I did have a look at BB 101 but not much there that
    defines SMS, text, IM's.

What are the most popular IM programs, both free and paid?

Also, is there an add-on program that would allow unlimited
texts with no charge from ATT?

    TIA

SMS = Short Message Service = text (teenspeak). Part of the basic GSM system, and works on all GSM phones with a voice plan. This is usually billed with the Voice service, not Data. If ATT are billing it as data this would be very unusual in the phone world.

IM - Instant Messaging. Data. Many variations found on PCs, usually not compatible with each other. Some BB clients exist compatible with popular PC IM programs. Usually travels through general internet channels.

For communication between 2 BBs there is also the BB Messenger, aka PIN messaging. Also billed to your data allowance, but never leaves the BB/RIM network to reach the target device.

Another way to get free text if you have aim or another app than can use AOL you can send an IM to a phone number. Just add a "+" infront of the phone number.
    For example:
    +5555555555 (10-digit #)
That would be the screen name you're sending the message to.
    Hope that helps

Text messages (SMS) are billed separately. Any IM's sent or received are included with your blackberry data plan.
