Hello, I just got my BB Pearl Friday, and I have been on it nonstop. I'm so excited, its so cool. Well I just have a few questions:
Can I change the icons that appear in the L theme?
Can I change the background of my L theme?

You can change the background on the L theme. I love the L theme b/c it still allows me to see my wallpaper. I do not know about the icons though. I've been trying to figure that out myself.
Welcome to CrackBerry! Not having a Pearl, I am not too sure if you can. Do a search and you may find the answers you are looking for
Yes to both. I use the L theme on my Curve.
To move an icon: Highlight the icon, use BB menu and choose "Move" and then scroll to where you want to place it.
To set your background: Choose an image, use the BB menu and scroll to "Set as desktop background" (or something like that).
Sultan is correct on both parts. Also keep in mind that you can downlad new themes which will not only alter the appearance of your background, but also your icons and the general interface of the phone. :)
